2. New American History Web Pages on SULAIR Site

Thanks to the hard of work of curatorial assistant Zoë Bower, a new set of web pages covering resources in American history at Stanford University Libraries are now available on the SULAIR website. The pages are designed to be navigable in a variety of ways and have organized resources by both subject and type.

Clicking on U.S. Collections on the site¿s sidebar takes users to a variety of headings that represent U.S. History by chronological period (e.g., Colonial and Revolutionary America), by topic (e.g., Women¿s History), and by type (e.g., Newspapers). In each section, digital resources are emphasized. Of particular interest are the ProQuest Historical Newspapers (including the New York Times and Los Angeles Times) and the Readex Archive of Americana (which includes a large collection of digitized early American Newspapers and a digital version of the U.S. Serial Set).

The updated and expanded American history web pages are available on the SULAIR site at: http://www-sul.stanford.edu/depts/hasrg/abhist/ushist/index.html

3. John Eilts Receives the David H. Partington Award

This past November, at the annual meeting of the Middle East Librarians Association (MELA), John Eilts, Curator for Middle East and Islamic Collections, received the first David H. Partington Award.

This award was named in honor of Dr. David H. Partington who has had a long and distinguished career in the Middle East collections of Princeton University Library, the University of Michigan Library, and Harvard University Library. He was one of the founders of the Middle East Librarians Association and served as its first president. With this award, MELA seeks to grant public and tangible recognition to its members who display similar standards of excellence and to recognize accomplishments in and contributions to the field of Middle East librarianship.

John has been Curator at Stanford University Libraries since 1991. Before he came here, he worked for the Research Libraries Group after having been Head of the Near East Division of the University of Michigan Libraries for many years. John has been very active in MELA (including President twice, Vice President and editor of MELA Notes), the Middle East Studies Association, the Middle East Microform Project, ALA (including member of the Subcommittee on Near East of the International Relations Committee, among others) and was instrumental in the formation of the Middle East Librarians of California.

John's presence here as Curator has elevated our Middle East Collection to national, if not international prominence; and we congratulate John on this well-deserved award and recognition. As part of the award, John received a beautiful plaque which he now has gracing the walls of his office. I am sure he would be pleased to show it to anyone who can find where his office is located.

5. New Additions to Access Services Loan Department

Angela Watts joined Access Services in November, replacing Ben Martin as the Loan and Course Reserves Evening Supervisor. Angela comes to us from SULAIR¿s Art Library, where she was worked as their Evening Supervisor. Her working knowledge of a branch library in the evening has been indispensable. We greatly appreciate her willingness to share her good ideas about workflow and space reorganization. Welcome Angela!

Kira Robertson has accepted a new role as the new Student Supervisor and a day workflow manager. Kira has been charged with organizing a new student training method in Access Services and with managing the daily workflow generally performed by students. Many Circulation folks know her as the distributor of informative and often entertaining minutes from our Quarterly UnicornCirc and monthly Circ Planning meetings, a role she will keep. We greatly appreciate her infectious enthusiasm for her work and wish her the best in her new position.

Ron Sadler has joined SULAIR as the new Operations Manager at SAL3. Ron has a background as manager of facilities and operations for solar energy and windpower systems. He brings a wealth of knowledge to the complicated building operations at SAL3. Ron also ran his own business for several years, publishing music books for teachers. Ron will be on campus most Thursdays to plan material moves to SAL3. Please join me in welcoming Ron.

Grace Dunbar Paul has accepted the position of Scanning Operations Manager. Grace's experience over the past four years at Swain library, including her recent experience in moving Swain books to SAL3, will be greatly appreciated when planning the logistics involved in moving items for scanning. Grace will start working full time January 3, 2006 on this exciting new project.

7. Welcome Kam Chan, New DLSS System Administrator

I'm extremely happy to say that Kam Chan has accepted an offer to join DLSS and take the role of system administrator. He will be starting on January 1, 2006, will sit in Meyer 310, and will be reporting to me directly. Kam comes from across campus in IT Services, where he has been a unix system administrator and a storage administrator for the past six years. He brings deep knowledge on storage, backup and unix system administration, as well as an admirable breadth of knowledge with solaris, windows, linux, aix and networking.

He will hit the ground running in January, as he already has an extensive knowledge of SUL's infrastructure; he was instrumental in moving SUL data and systems to the new SAN earlier this year. His background and skills will be an incredible asset as we continue to work with our partners in IT Services to build out the SDR and our lab systems and infrastructure over the next year.

Please join me in welcoming Kam to SULAIR with the return from Winter Break.
