1. SULAIR Technology Chalk Talk on Podcasting: Thursday, March 8, 2-3 PM

This Thursday, the SULAIR Technology Chalk Talk will feature Kimberly Hayworth, presenting on podcasting, and its current and potential uses at Stanford.

What: Podcasting in Academia: What, Why and How?
SULAIR Technology Chalk Talk
When: Thursday, 3/8, 2 - 3 PM
Where: Green Library, SSRC Seminar Room

Podcasting is a way to distribute audio or video files over the Internet, which can then be played on PC's or mobile devices by any interested party. According to Wikipedia, "like 'radio', it can mean both the content and the method of syndication." Unlike radio, though, the bar to producing a podcast is low enough that it can be done by any individual. And by leveraging the Internet to 'narrowcast' podcasts to interested audiences, podcasting has created a brand new channel for media exchange and building communities.

Are you curious about podcasting, and want to see how it is being used in academic contexts? This talk will demonstrate Stanford on iTunes U, as well as examples from other schools and organizations that are podcasting for teaching and learning.

Or are you interested in podcasting but have questions about how to get started? Whether you'd like to create a simple audio-only podcast or need to develop an enhanced podcast supporting text, images and video, this talk will cover the basics of what you need to get up to speed quickly. Kimberly Hayworth, Manager of the Consulting and Multimedia Services group in SULAIR, will provide an overview of different tools available for easily producing and distributing podcasts. This presentation will include information about Apple's GarageBand and free online services such as FeedBurner.

2. Conservation Welcomes Deb Fox, Paper Conservator

The Conservation Department is happy to welcome Deb Fox. Deb is currently the Paper Conservator for the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco where she has worked for many years. Deb will continue to work for the Asian Art Museum, splitting her time between the museum and SULAIR.

Deb has had a long and interesting career in paper conservation. When I asked her about some of the more interesting projects she's worked on, she told me about an assessment she did of the paper based materials of St. Innocent's Cathedral in Unalaska, Alaska. The purpose of the assessment was to determine damages caused as a result of the army occupation during WWII and the forced evacuation of the Aleut people. (A little known part of our country's history.) Deb assisted with the preparation of a report to Congress to request reparation money. This request was granted.

Deb has also treated the California State Constitution in preparation for a commemorative exhibit.

The oldest paper Deb ever worked on was a Japanese Sutra dated 1200. The craziest piece she ever worked on was the Dealer's spec. sheet that had been affixed to the gas tank of a 57 Corvette that needed to be legible. The biggest piece she ever worked on was a 35 foot long paper sculpture by an South Asian artist.

We think she'll fit right in!

Please help us welcome Deb. She can be reached in the Conservation Lab Tuesdays all day and Thursdays in the afternoon.

3. Welcome to Lauren Scott, SULAIR's New Manager of Systems Integration

I'm very pleased to officially announce that Lauren Scott has accepted the position of Manager, Systems Integration in DLSS. Lauren is replacing Karen Kalinsky, who retired on February 1. Her responsibilities will include managing the support and enhancements of Unicorn and SULAIR's other critical, back-office information systems; taking over project management for such efforts as Unicorn's migration to Unicode; and helping define, deliver and support the systems that will support Stanford's digital library of the future.

Lauren brings great experience in working with people, projects and enterprise systems to this position. In addition to a Stanford degree, and an MLS from San Jose State University, she has spent much of her career at Oracle Corporation, most recently as a product architect and senior product manager for their application development division. Since 2004, she has also worked in SULAIR, first as a volunteer in Special Collections, and then as a digital collections project manager in DLSS.

In this capacity, many of us have had the opportunity to work directly with her, and can attest first hand to her intelligence, professionalism, skills, and effectiveness at working in SULAIR. I consider us lucky to have attracted such a qualified candidate to such a critical position, and look forward with great anticipation to her contributions over the coming years.

Lauren will start full time on Monday, March 12; her office will be in 314 Meyer Library; her email address is lwscott@stanford.edu. For those of you who have yet to meet her, please don't hesitate to introduce yourselves when the opportunity arises.

4. Farewell to Frey Leigh

After over 17 years of excellent service to Stanford University, Frey Leigh, Serials and Microforms Support Cataloger, will retire from SULAIR in April 2007.

Frey's Stanford career began in the Acquisitions Department of Lane Medical Library in 1990. In 1991, he joined the SULAIR Acquisitions Department as a monographic receiver, eventually adding half-time duties in the Cataloging Department until in 1996, he moved to the Cataloging Department full-time by joining the Classification Unit. From 2000 to early 2004, Frey worked as a Library Specialist in the Materials Control Unit before joining the MARC Unit as Serials and Microforms Support Cataloger in January 2004. His last day at SULAIR will be March 30, 2007.

With his many years of service and variety of responsibilities, Frey has become a reliable and valuable colleague. His calm and hard-working nature and his expertise, particularly with cataloging microforms, will be greatly missed.

There will be a farewell cake and ice cream party for Frey on March 29, 3-5 p.m., in the Meyer Library 3rd Floor Staff Room. Please stop by and join us in wishing all the best to Frey in this new phase of life.
