1. Unicorn Upgrade to GL3.1 Completed Successfully

Digital Library Systems & Services is pleased to announce that Unicorn was successfully upgraded to GL3.1 over the weekend of June 16-17. Workflows logoCompletion of this upgrade is a milestone in SULAIR's move toward a Unicode environment. This upgrade involved both the Oracle database and the Unicorn software, which are now at versions required for a Unicode migration.

Many, many people were involved in work to make this upgrade a success. Thanks goes out to all those in Technical Services and Collections and Services who worked hard to test the software prior to the upgrade, and to train staffers on the new version. The efforts of the Library Expert Partners and Unicorn Coordinators in ensuring that staffers had the correct client setup was a key part of the process. And thanks to everyone for their patience after the upgrade while some inevitable problems were sorted out and resolved.

Finally, special thanks to the many DLSS staffers who worked overnight and at odd hours to make the upgrade as smooth as possible, especially: Matthew Ahmed, Sam Natarajan, Darsi Rueda, Carol Lawrence, and Foster Zhang.

Questions? Contact James R. Jacobs, jrjacobs@stanford.edu

Rick Falkvinge is best known as the founder of the Swedish Pirate Party and is active in the international politicized pirate movement. On July 31st he will join us on campus to talk about the rise of pirates in modern society, and why pirates are necessary in today's politics. He'll also outline the next steps in the pirates' strategy to change global copyright laws.

The fight against copyright aggression tends to focus on economic aspects of the shift to a networked economy. Falkvinge explains how this conflict is much broader, and tied to fundamental civil liberties, including the postal secret, whistleblower protection, freedom of the press, and even issues of identity.

Biography: Rick Falkvinge is the founder and leader of the Swedish Pirate Party, as well as the founder of the international politicized pirate movement. Under his leadership the Pirate Party grew from nothing into one of the top ten parties in the last Swedish election, and all without a dime in the campaign chest. Rick's personal candidacy came in at #15 out of over 5,000 candidates for parliament, although he didn't win a seat due to threshold rules. However, his fight against copyright aggression continues, as does the party.

7. ***Reference Question of the Week ***

Question: I am doing research on pharmaceutical companies. I don't have a specific research angle yet but I'd like to explore about pharmaceutical industry and ethics.

Answer: Since you are still in the process of shaping your research topic, I suggest you to start with journal and newspaper articles to get some overall ideas on this topic.

You can start with a database called Academic Search Premier (available only to Stanford users), which includes scholarly journals as well as popular magazines. You can use search terms like pharmaceutical industry and ethics and will find many articles in your search results. For newspaper articles, I'd suggest the following databases:

  • Alt-PressWatch (available only to Stanford users) includes newspapers, magazines, and journals of the alternative and independent press.
  • America's Newspapers (available only to Stanford users) contains complete full-text content of local and regional news, including community events, government policies, cultural activities etc.
  • Lexis Nexis (available only to Stanford Users) has transcripts of radio and television programs, law review journals, government documents etc
For the rest of the answer, please visit the Information Center Web site at: https://www.stanford.edu/group/ic/cgi-bin/drupal/node/170.

To contribute to the Reference Question of the Week feature of SULAIR News, submit your question and answer through the SULAIR News online submission form at: http://sulairnews.stanford.edu/issues/submit/submit.jsp.
