2. SULAIR Staff Anniversary Honorees
The annual SULAIR Holiday Party at the Schwab Center was festive and full of good cheer. In addition to celebrating the accomplishments of 2007 and toasting the opportunities to come in 2008, the staff honored their colleagues celebrating Stanford anniversaries of five-year increments. For the listing of honorees, please see

3. Add Socrates and StanfordWho Searches to Your Browser's Toolbar
For those of you who use FireFox for your browser, you can add both a Socrates search and a StanfordWho search to your Firefox toolbar. (To see the your current list of searches in your Firebox toolbar, in the upper right corner of your Firefox browser window, where a Google search is usually displayed, click on the down arrow for a dropdown menu that lists your other current searches.)
Following are descriptions of how to add the Socrates and Stanford Who searches. Thanks to Jon Lavigne for the Socrates Search and to John Foliot of Stanford's Online Accessibility Program for the StanfordWho search.
To add a Socrates Search, go to http://library.stanford.edu/opensea for instructions. Note that these instructions describe how to add a Socrates Search in both the Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers.
To add a StanfordWho Search, visit the Stanford Online Accessibiliity Program (SOAP) Web site (http://soap.stanford.edu) via your Firefox browser. Once there, activate the dropdown menu for your list of current searches (in the upper right corner or your Firefox browser window). At the bottom of the list you should see "Add StanfordWho Search". Clicking on this text will add this functionality to the list. By default, searching via this method will return the public view record from StanfordWho, however if you are already logged in (WebAuth), you will receive the full Stanford/private view.

4. Welcome Rob Smith
I am pleased to announce that Rob Smith has rejoined Stanford and SULAIR, and as of today will be working as a systems administrator in DLSS, supporting the Libraries' and ACOMP's systems environment. Rob left Stanford last May after a long tenure in SULAIR Tech Support doing desktop support and imaging. With his return, he will be taking on lead administration of our Windows servers, as well as a range of projects to help grow and manage our increasingly complex server, storage and network infrastructure.
Rob is reporting directly to me as part of the Sys Admin team, and is sitting in Meyer 210 next to Greg Chalfin. His email address is rsmith11@stanford.edu
Please join me in welcoming Rob back.

5. Rachel Gollub Moving On
Rachel Gollub, Manager of Development and Research in DLSS, is leaving us. She will be joining an exciting new start up called Light Crafts (http://www.lightcrafts.com/). Her last day was Friday, December 14. I will be posting a position for a replacement for her shortly; until that position is filled, I will serve as acting manager for the D&R team, and Alpana Pande has kindly agreed to step in as the lead developer for D&R and SDR.
Since joining DLSS (then DSG) nearly three years ago, Rachel has had a tremendous impact. She has been the driving force in making SDR what it is today, taking it from the starting blocks to a working system. She has also been instrumental in fostering the development of SULAIR's digital library environment, and of DLSS as an organization. Before that, she played an equally valuable role as the development manager and lead developer for the CourseWork team.
In the years we have worked together, I have grown to rely on and value Rachel's technical brilliance, her prolific development pace, her undying fascination with emerging technologies, and her innate love of books and scholarship. Just as importantly, and as anyone who has worked with her can attest, she has been an unfailingly positive person, as generous with her knowledge and skills as she is interested in her coworkers as people.
Please join me in wishing Rachel well in her new endeavor, and thanking her for her contributions to SULAIR and Stanford.

6. ***Reference Question of the Week ***
Question: Are there resources to help me decide which charities to contribute to? Is it safe to donate online?
Answer: The most well-known online evaluation source is Charity Navigator, which has a database of ratings of over 2,500 charities in the United States. They have a Holiday Giving Guide under “Hot topics”, as well as information of protecting yourself from online scams and guides to donating your car in the Tips and Resources section. You can browse by categories.
The American Institution of Philanthropy
charges for its report of about 500 charities, but it does freely
provide a list by category of 150 of the top-rated charities from this
guide. They also have advice on how to compare charities and give
wisely.
For information on ethical gift giving, see the Responsible Shopper from CoopAmerica.org. It links to the National Green pages, which includes evaluations of Green and fair-trade toys.
For legal information, searching in SOCRATES under the subject Income tax deductions for charitable contributions retrieves 158 titles on this topic, including Charitable gift planning: a practical guide for the estate planner by Thomas J. Ray, Jr., 2nd edition. Other books can be found using subject headings Charitable giving and also Philanthropists United States.
See more reference questions and answers at the Information Center Web site.
To contribute to the Reference Question of the Week feature of SULAIR News, submit your question and answer through the SULAIR News online submission form at: http://sulairnews.stanford.edu/issues/submit/submit.jsp.
