1. Commute Club Members Received Up to $78 Each in Clean Air Cash in December
If you were a Commute Club member during fall quarter, Clean Air Cash should have appeared in your pay statement or by direct bank deposit around December 19, 2007 - perfectly timed for the holidays! If you were in the Commute Club from September through December, your Clean Air Cash deposit should be $78. Please note that Clean Air Cash is normally paid by the quarter, so the winter payment in March will be adjusted to cover only two months - January and February - since December was included in the fall quarter payment.
If you have questions, send us an email at commuteclub@stanford.edu. If you're not in the Commute Club but want to receive Clean Air Cash, see if you are eligible to join. Visit our Web site to learn more: http://transportation.stanford.edu/commuteclub.

2. Julie Sweetkind-Singer Accepted to Frye Leadership Institute
It is my pleasure to announce that Julie Sweetkind-Singer, Head of the Branner Earth Sciences Library & Map Library, has been accepted into the Frye Leadership Institute. The Frye Institute's mission is to help develop leaders who will transform academic information services for higher education in the twenty-first century. This highly competitive program involves a two week residential program at Emory University and a year-long practicum related to issues at the participant's home institution. Please join me in congratulating Julie.

3. Helen Josephine Appointed to IEEE Library Advisory Council
Helen Josephine, Head of the Engineering Library, has been appointed to the IEEE Library Advisory Council for a two year term. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the world's largest engineering society with over 370,000 members and is a leading technical publisher in electrical engineering, automation and control, and numerous other areas of engineering and materials science. Helen's role with IEEE provides Stanford with a stronger voice with this important publisher.

4. ***Reference Question of the Week ***
Question:
I am searching for a journal article and the citation I have been given
seems to be incorrect. I have the author and the title, and I have
searched the journal volume and issue in the citation, and the article
is not there. How can I find this article?
Answer:
Citations from bibliographies and personal references are often
incorrect. When this happens, there are two strategies for finding the
correct citation.
The first (not always accurate, but an easy first step) is to "Google"
the article title and author. Often you will find a link with a
citation that is different than the one you have (but sometimes the
link will have the same incorrect citation).
The formal and most accurate strategy for citation verification is to use one of the Databases (periodical indexes). They are organized by topic, so you can narrow down your choice of Databases, or use the short list
of the most common databases. Link to one of these databases and search
for the title and/or author (sometimes the author or title in your
citation is incorrect, so it's best to search one at a time if you
don't find it using both).
When you find the citation in a database, then search for the journal and find your article.
You can find more reference questions and answers at the Information Center Web
site.
