2. Association for Recorded Sound Collections at Stanford

The annual conference of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections will be held at the Braun Music Center on March 26-29. The conference corresponds with the 50th anniversary of the Archive of Recorded Sound at Stanford. A number of presentations relating to libraries and archives are on the program including: "Label Lust: From A-1 Records to Zon-o-phone" by Frank Ferko; "So Far, Only One Pie: The Commonwealth Club of California Broadcast Collection at the Hoover Institution Archives" by Brandon Burke, James Sam and Eric Jacobs; "Sound Recording Technology in Silicon Valley" with Henry Lowood, Jay McKnight, and John Leslie; "Saving Our Sounds (Legally!): Changing Copyright to Preserve Access to Audio Heritage" by Brandy Karl, Stanford Center for Internet and Society; and many others.

3. MARC Unit Librarian in Print

Heidi Lerner (Hebraica/Judaica Cataloger), recently co-authored "Johann Heinrich Hottinger and the Systematic Organization of Jewish Literature" with Seth Jerchower (Head, Price Library of Judaica at the University of Florida). This article appears in v. 13 of Judaica Librarianship and explores the influence of the 17th century Swiss theologian, Orientalist, and Christian Hebraist, and his work in developing a classified Hebraica bibliography. Hottinger has been variously described as the "greatest Swiss scholar of the seventeenth century" and the most important bibliographer of the seventeenth century. Until now, his theories were not closely examined by Judaica bibliographers or scholars of Jewish intellectual history.

4. Welcome Irina Trapido

The Serials Access & Maintenance Unit (SAM) of the Acquisitions Department on Meyer 3rd floor would like to welcome Irina Trapido. Irina is no stranger to many of us. She worked half-time as the Serial Specialist in the Art Library for 3 years and half-time as the Evening Circulation Supervisor in the Engineering Library for 4 years. Irina is filling behind Orly Avni who left Stanford in December 2007 to return to her home in Israel.

Irina’s primary responsibilities will be setting up serial control records for journals so that they can be received online in an efficient and timely manner, maintaining and resolving complex problems with the serial control records when journals had a change in publication frequency, a change of subscription vendor, a change in title, or ceased publication altogether. She will be working with materials in all formats and languages. Irina will also be responsible for checking in, processing and claiming Hebrew serial titles in the Serials Receiving Unit.

Irina received a BA in Linguistics and Teaching Foreign Languages from Moscow State Linguistic University. She speaks four languages - English, Russian, Spanish and Hebrew. We are very fortunate to have her join our team(s).

5. ***Reference Question of the Week ***

Question: I am looking for a government sponsored research report. I thought I would find it by googling but I can't seem to locate it. Can you help me?

Answer: It sounds like you are looking for a technical report. Since there is no central control for the publication and dissemination of these reports, they can be tricky to find. See Finding Technical Reports (http://library.stanford.edu/collect/techrpt.html) to learn more.

You can find more reference questions and answers at the Information Center Web site.

To contribute to the Reference Question of the Week feature of SULAIR News, submit your question and answer through the SULAIR News online submission form at: http://sulairnews.stanford.edu/issues/submit/submit.jsp.
