2. Announcement: Arabic and Hebrew Original Script Fields Now in Socrates
Over the winter close, SULAIR upgraded its integrated library system (SirsiDynix Unicorn) to support Unicode. Unicode is a character encoding standard developed by the Unicode Consortium. The standard uses more than one byte to represent each character, and this allows almost all of the written languages in the world to be represented by using a single character set. For SULAIR this means that Socrates can start displaying all the scripts and characters of the languages in which the Library catalogs regularly.
As of February 11, catalog records in Socrates display the original script for most materials printed in Hebrew or Arabic. In addition, you can search for authors and titles in Arabic or Hebrew script, via the normal Socrates search box (using an appropriate input keyboard). Until now the only way to conduct searches in Socrates for Hebrew and Arabic materials was in transliteration into Latin script - and that option remains available.
This is the first publicly visible phase of a project that has been ongoing for a number of years and will continue to add other scripts. The next phase will work on adding Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
Numerous people throughout SULAIR contributed to this project, and deserve thanks and credit for their efforts:
DLSS: Matthew Ahmed, Jon Lavigne, Carol Lawrence, Rita Lunnon, Amy McGuire, Sam Natarajan, Darsi Rueda, and Sandy Sklar
Technical Services: Xan Arch, Joanna Dyla, Sue-Ellen Johnson, Peter Kim, Heidi Lerner, Sarah Seestone, and Vitus Tang
Collections and Services: Kavous Barghi, David Giovacchini, and Jonathan Hopwood

3. New Exhibition at the Art & Architecture Library
The Art & Architecture Library is pleased to announce its latest exhibition, Collection Highlights I: Collaborations, now on view in the Library's Reading Room. The show features pieces from the Library's Locked Stacks collection and centers upon the theme of published works created in partnership.
A project undertaken by multiple participants (painters or poets, calligraphers or critics) is often deemed experimental, or at least unusual. In any case, it is an opportunity for a juxtaposition of media or styles, undertaken in a manner that might not occur to or be possible for any single artist. The exhibition includes examples of such partnerships ranging from the tenth century to today, from Japan to Austria to San Francisco.
We hope you'll join us in enjoying these superb manifestations of the collaborative endeavor. Special thanks to David Brock and Becky Fischbach for their continued assistance in the development of our new exhibition program.

4. Part-Time Work Available
The Digital Production Group (a unit of DLSS) has approximately 50 hours of work available for a project-specific task beginning as soon as possible. Preference is for a currently employed (part-time or hourly) Stanford or Coordinate Library staff member. Familiarity with searching multiple online library databases essential. Pace of work will necessarily be sporadic and spread out over a multiple-week period, as dictated by the task.
To indicate interest, or for further information, please contact Cathy Aster at: 5-4042 or caster@stanford.edu.

5. ***Reference Question of the Week ***
Question: Hi! I'm looking for a Stanford Ph.D.
thesis that was published in "Economic Geology" in April 1990; It's
called "Epithermal deposition of gold during transition from propylitic
to potassic alteration at Round Mountain, Nevada" and was written by
Mark V. Sander and Marco T. Einaudi. What would my best bet be for
finding that?
Answer: According to Socrates, our online catalog, the journal Economic Geology is available at the Branner Earth Sciences library (call# 550.5 .E19).
In addition, all Stanford theses are available online from 1989 - present through the database called Dissertations and Theses (Available only to Stanford students and listed at http://databases.stanford.edu).
