1. Special Funding Opportunities for Innovation and Research

The SULAIR directors are soliciting project applications for the Payson J. Treat Fund for innovation and from the David C. Weber Research Fund for scholarship in fields related to SULAIR collections, programs, and services.

The Payson J. Treat Fund for Library Program Development and Research provides funds to encourage innovative projects to improve and enhance the effectiveness of SULAIR services and programs. In effect, the Fund offers seed money for planning, development, and testing of incremental innovation that otherwise might get lost amid more pressing department priorities.

The David C. Weber Librarian's Research Fund provides grants to support research in librarianship and related fields, including both scholarly writing in bibliography, the history of the book, etc. and professional writing on management, automation, etc. leading to publication. The objective of the Fund is to encourage and recognize staff potential for original and innovative work.

The Web pages list titles of some projects funded in previous years, describe the application process, and, for the Treat Fund, provide a link to a sample application.

Further descriptions are available at:
http://library.stanford.edu/depts/diroff/grants/index.html

From the SULAIR Web page:
http://library.stanford.edu/about_sulair/for_sul_staff/index.html

The deadline for the current application cycle is March 31, 2008; we prefer to select from a pool of applications on a regular basis, but please note that if funds are still available, applications are considered throughout the year.

2. Web 2.0 Principles and Best Practices Webcast on March 5th

Lane Medical Library is hosting MLA's Educational Webcast on Wednesday, March 5th. The goal of this program is to provide a basic understanding of Web 2.0 terminology and concepts, assess the effect of the technology on heath sciences library services, and identify the impact of Web 2.0 services on health care today and coming future.

"Web 2.0 Principles and Best Practices: Discovering the Participatory Web" will air on Wednesday, March 5, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Medical Center campus in Always M114.

3. RISC Notes

A couple of items of interest from the last RISC meeting:

  • John Bickar gave a demonstration of LibX. To learn more about this new Firefox plug-in, see his page at:

    https://www.stanford.edu/group/cubberley/services/libx

  • Some records in Socrates have many ISBNs these days, so after much discussion and consultation with our colleagues, we've decided to move these to the bottom of the records, after Subjects/Added Authors, etc. and before Recently Rec'd info.

4. New Staff at the Miller Library

Please join me in welcoming Don Kohrs to SULAIR. He started working in the Miller Library just last week, but he is a long time user. With a BS and MS in biology, Don worked as a researcher at Hopkins starting in 1992. He left Hopkins for a while to work across the street at the Monterey Bay Aquarium doing a variety of jobs such Sea Food Watch and COMPASS. He later returned to Hopkins working in Professor Block's lab as project coordinator for the TOPP Program (Tagging of Pacific Pelagics). A few years ago Don started taking classes at San Jose State working towards his Library Information Science degree. With his science background, his knowledge of Stanford and Hopkins, and the classes he has been taking in library science, I expect Don will hit the ground running.

Don's email is dkohrs@stanford.edu and his phone is 831-655-6229.

5. ***Reference Question of the Week ***

Question:
I am looking at advertising in India, particularly researching global versus local efforts. Can you tell me where to look?

Answer:

For books, if you look in Socrates for advertising india and then select the Details of some of the records, you will find good subject headings, e.g.,
Consumers--India--Attitudes
Consumer behavior--India.

There is also a book on Asia, but it includes India, called How Asia Advertises...note that this book and some of the others are in the Business Library (click on the Details and you will see a link under Location that will get you to their catalog).

Don't forget to check the bibliographies of the books you find - you can look up book titles or the title of the journals (not the article title) in Socrates to see if we have the resource.

For the complete answer, visit the Information Center Web site at:
https://www.stanford.edu/group/ic/cgi-bin/drupal/node/413

To contribute to the Reference Question of the Week feature of SULAIR News, submit your question and answer through the SULAIR News online submission form at: http://sulairnews.stanford.edu/issues/submit/submit.jsp.
