1. Conserving Some Energy at Green Library
R.T. Carr is doing his part to make Green Library a little greener... On kiosk and cluster computer monitors in Green Library and on study carrels in Green East and the West Stacks, R.T. has posted small stickers that politely ask the user to please turn off the monitor or carrel light when it is not in use. Thanks to R.T. for posting the stickers during his closing rounds and for reminding us of the little things that make a big difference.

2. Welcome Suzette Caneda
Please join me in welcoming Suzette Caneda to her new role as Ordering Operations Manager in the Acquisitions Department.
Suzette started at Stanford as part of the Google Scanning Operations team in early 2006 and moved to the Monograph Receiving unit in November 2006 to work as a Monograph Receiver and Copy Cataloger. Suzette received a B.A. in Art from San Jose State University and is currently studying for her Master of Library and Information Science degree at SJSU.
Beginning April 1st, Suzette will be managing the daily operations of the Ordering Unit as well as taking on some administrative tasks for Acquisitions.
We are looking forward to working with Suzette in the Ordering unit!

3. Dennis Cruzada to Retire
Dennis Cruzada, facilities manager for SULAIR, has announced his retirement, effective April 1, 2008. Both lamentations and congratulations have been pouring in from SULAIR and Facilities staff who have worked with Dennis and been the beneficiaries of his good cheer and positive attitude.
Dennis has a long and varied career at Stanford, which has exposed him to many operational areas of the Stanford facilities world and allowed him to establish valuable contacts throughout the university. (Dennis probably carries the name or number of more Stanford staff in his cell phone than anyone else on campus.)
Dennis arrived on June 21, 1981, beginning his Stanford career at Forsythe Hall as the storekeeper, managing the warehouse facility for the Data Center. Shortly thereafter, in addition, he became a supervisor for Courier Services (the Data Center department which provided services to the hospital and Research Libraries Group). In 1986, in addition to all the above, he became the assistant to the facility manager, handling building projects at the Jordan Quad (including Polya and Forsythe Hall, Pine and Redwood Halls, and the various nearby trailers belonging to the Research Libraries Group).
In 1994, Don Intersimone lured him to work at SULAIR as a facilities coordinator, working out of Sweet Hall. His many and varied projects in the years since include the move of the HighWire Press staff from the Galvez Modulars to 1454 Page Mill Road; managing many projects connected with the renovation of Green West; orchestrating many moves, including Special Collections from Green East to the Bing Wing, Technical Services staff move to the 3rd floor, and the East Asia Library move to the 4th floor of Meyer; activating SAL 3 at Livermore; and managing innumerable repairs and renovations projects in library facilities.
In 2002 Dennis moved to the facilities manager position, which was expanded to include the supervision of the Mail Room, shipping and receiving, and oversight for all the SULAIR vehicles - quite an extensive list of responsibilities! His retirement will have a profound effect on our operations, and he will be missed not only for his capable direction at the Facilities helm, but as well for the thoughtful, always-pleasant colleague he has been to all of us.
With Dennis' departure, Administrative Services will be realigning three positions over the spring and summer. We will fill a second facilities coordinator position and add a manager for Shipping and Receiving operations. Overall management and administration of SULAIR Facilities will reside with the new associate director for facilities, once that position is filled.
We will gather to celebrate Dennis' moving on to his next life stage. Plans are in the making for a farewell event on Friday, March 28th. Details to follow.

4. ***Reference Question of the Week ***
Question: Where can I find speeches given by Rosalynn Carter and Nancy Reagan? I only want speeches when they were First Ladies.
Answer: How Do I Find Speech Texts and Debates offers possible resources available at Stanford. Vital Speeches of the Day, available through Socrates,
lists the library's print holdings at SAL 1&2. The Socrates record
also offers e-access through various databases to search Vital Speeches of the Day content.
Additional possibilities include:
For books on Mrs. Carter and Mrs. Reagan's years as First Ladies, possible subject searches in Socrates are:
- Carter, Rosalynn
- Reagan, Nancy
- First Ladies United States
Narrow this subject string with keywords, using a Socrates Combined Search.
Review the retrieved volumes for the texts of speeches or cited speeches.
Among Stanford's databases, I found interviews with both Mrs. Carter and Mrs.Reagan during their White House years in:
- Reader's Guide Retrospective
Though Reader's Guide Retrospective includes all articles listed in the printed volumes, Reader's Guide To Periodical Literature (IC call number A13 .R4), browsing these indexes would be helpful.
