2. Parking & Transportation News

As the following messages from Parking & Transportation Services suggest:

1.
Campus parking will be subject to a continuing sequence of changes, interruptions, and relocations, and

2.
The incentives for staff to use alternate commute modes will continue with a variety of offers and opportunities.

  • Parking Structure 6 Expected to Open at the End of April
  • Parking will be displaced at Wilbur Lot, Memorial Lot, and Memorial Way and valet service ends.

Parking Structure 6 (PS-6), off Campus Drive East near the Munger housing project and the Law School, is scheduled to be completed at the end of this month. The new structure will offer 1,180 new parking spaces for commuter, resident ("EA" and "SO" permits) and visitor parking.

As PS-6 opens, the valet service will end at Tresidder Lot (L-39), and there will be a temporary closure of Wilbur South Parking Lot (L-62) for a reconfiguration project. There also will be a permanent closure of the Wilbur-Stern Temporary Lot (located between Stern Hall and Wilbur Hall, adjacent to PS-6).

Alternatives to the Wilbur Lots include PS-6 for "A", "C", and "EA" permit holders, and Wilbur East Parking Lot (L-63), Bowdoin Street parking (between Campus Drive and Stanford Avenue), and Cowell at Bowdoin Parking Lot (L-65) for "C", "EA" and "ES" permit holders.

The Memorial parking lot (L-83), at the corner of Galvez Street and Memorial Way, is expected to close permanently on May 5 due to the expansion of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR). Visitor pay parking will be relocated to Memorial Way. "A" permit parking alternatives include Galvez Street, the Serra West lot (L-90), Lasuen Street, Roth Way, Museum Way, and the Oval.

For more information, please contact Parking Operations at parkingoperations@stanford.edu or 650.723.9362.

5. Posters on Display at the Art & Architecture Library

A collection of posters by the artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres (1957-1996) is currently on view in the Art & Architecture Library's Reading Room. The posters are representative of five stacked-paper works designed by Gonzalez-Torres in the early 1990s. Each of the stacks, created by exhibiting institutions according to the artist's specifications, is meant to be interactive: museum visitors are free to take a poster away with them, thereby dispersing the piece into the wider environment. The museum then replenishes the pile; the interaction is therefore dynamic and ongoing.

For an installation view of one of the works, visit:

6. ***Reference Question of the Week ***

Question: I heard an NPR show on the history of Olympic boycotts, and I was wondering where I could get a transcript of the show?

Answer: One way to locate TV and Radio news transcripts is through LexisNexis.

Select TV and Radio Broadcast Transcripts to Search Within, and specify the date range for your search. In the Results list, you can see the sources of your results by clicking on the + sign next to "News Transcripts" in the left column. From there you can limit your results list to those from National Public Radio (NPR).

A search for "Olympic boycotts" yields transcripts from NPR, CNN, ABC, CBS, and more; including a March 27, 2008, All Things Considered segment titled "The Crossroads of Diplomacy and Sport." This looks like the one you heard.

For the complete answer, visit the Information Center Web site at: https://www.stanford.edu/group/ic/cgi-bin/drupal/content/qa-locating-a-news-transcript

To contribute to the Reference Question of the Week feature of SULAIR News, submit your question and answer through the SULAIR News online submission form at:
