2. VRC's Amber Ruiz and ATS Dena Debry Speak at VRA; Ruiz Appointed to SEI Advisory Group

VRC (Visual Resources Center) Curator Amber Ruiz and VRC Academic Technology Specialist (ATS) Dena DeBry were panel members at the 2008 VRA (Visual Resources Association) conference in San Diego. They spoke at a session titled "Common Threads: Libraries and Visual Resources Collections Merging, Partnering, and Finding New Ways to Work Together." Their paper, titled "Unlocking the Doors," covered the transfer of the VRC from the Department of Art & Art History to the Art & Architecture Library and discussed the past, present and future of VRC.

I am also pleased to announce that Amber Ruiz was recently appointed to the Summer Educational Institute (SEI) Advisory Group. SEI is an intensive, week-long workshop, which provides information professionals with training in image management and visual resources. SEI is co-sponsored by VRA and the Art Libraries Society of North America. The purpose of the Advisory Group is to assist these organizations in determining the direction of SEI for the next three to five years. I should note that the Samuel H. Kress Foundation just granted a two-year stipend to underwrite SEI attendance by currently enrolled library school students.

Congratulations to Amber and Dena on their successes!

3. ***Reference Question of the Week ***

Question: How much did the federal government spend on national defense in 1942?

Answer: You can find historical on U.S. military spending data in Historical tables, budget of the United States Government, published annually by the Office of Management and Budget. This is available online and in print. You want to keep in mind that in the document, military spending refers to national defense. For more recent information on U.S. military expenditure, you will want to check Annual Department of Defense budget materials under Office of the Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller).

In addition, there are many organizations and Web sites that analyze military expenditures in global contexts. Below are a few resources that I recommend:

You can find more reference questions and answers at the Information Center Web site.
