1. Coming Soon: A New Electronic Journals List for SULAIR
At the beginning of Summer Quarter 2008, we will replace our A-Z list of journals that are available electronically to the Stanford community. We are still working on the final version of this page but you can see a sneak preview at:
http://caslon.stanford.edu:3210/sfxlcl3/az
Besides the new look there are some additional features, including a Citation Linker, which you may find useful.
After June 23, the E-JOURNALS link at the top of the SULAIR homepage will go to this new page. Users will still be able to access our "old" e-journals page from a link on the new page until August 31.
You can give us your feedback by clicking on the Feedback link on the new page.

2. Global Update for SULAIR Web Site Coming
We will be making some global updates to the SULAIR homepage and to the templates that control the look and functionality of all SULAIR Web pages from June 20-27. The update and the instructions that follow apply to all SULAIR Web sites using the Dreamweaver templates.
To ensure that all pages get updated, please do NOT make any updates to your Web pages between Friday, June 20 at 8:00 PM through midnight on Friday, June 27.
If we are able to complete all updates earlier than June 27, we will notify you by email that the updates are complete and that Web pages can be Checked Out and updated at that time.
We will be making the following global updates and homepage changes:
-
Change link for E-journals in the Red Tool Bar at the top of all pages from TDNet to SFX A-Z journals list. This change is necessitated by our pending change from TDNet to SFX for our A-Z E-journals list.
-
Change Databases dropdown menu to match our current Databases page. The new dropdown choices (in order) for the Databases dropdown list will be:
o Databases by Subject (default)
o Databases by Title
o Not Sure Which Database to Use? -
Create "redirect" URLs for all the links in the Hours & Locations dropdown menu. This will allow us to easily update any links in this dropdown menu without another global update.
-
Add "Federated Search" to the Catalogs and Search Tools column on the homepage. The "More About Catalogs & Search Tools" link in the "Catalogs & Search Tools" column on the homepage will be deleted and replaced with "Federated Search".
-
Change the title of the "News & Events" space on the home page to "Highlights". This space will continue to be used to highlight library collections and resources, as well as for news and events.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Chris Bourg at mchris@stanford.edu.

3. Final Phase of Serials Conversion to Online Check-In Completed!
In October 1999, the Serials Receiving Unit embarked on a project to convert all serial titles (around 35,000) received on subscription or standing order from manual to online check-in. The majority of titles were converted at point of receipt with piece in hand, but after assessing the manual card file in the summer of 2007 it was determined that 3,000 titles remained unconverted and needed to be evaluated and a decision made on their status.
A special "Search & Kill" project was organized and a group of serials staff spent the past 5 months looking at each and every record for the remaining titles to determine the publication status and SUL holdings. We are happy to report that all of these 3,000 titles have now either been put to rest (ceased, changed titles, changed format or cancelled) or finally converted to online check-in, resulting in a much cleaner database and realistic representation of holdings of active/inactive titles. We can proudly say that each and every serial title in the manual file has now been looked at, dealt with and had its bibliographic record updated. We are done!
Congratulations to the project manager: Brigitte Burnham, Acquisitions staff: Donna Bookbinder, Faina Slain, Kaylan O'Byrne, Shelley Doljack, Veena Bhargava and our Harrassowitz intern: Claudia Dorn on this significant accomplishment.

6. New Appointments in SULAIR Facilities
This has been a year of change in SULAIR Facilities, and I am very pleased to announce two appointments. Edgar Maxion, who came to Stanford just over a year ago with a background in facilities operations in art institutions, has accepted a challenging assignment as Associate Director for Facilities. Stepping up from his current facilities coordinator position, Edgar will take on responsibility for day-to-day management and operations of our many physical facilities on campus and our off-campus buildings as well.
Ed Carigan, who is brand new to Stanford, has come on board as Manager for Shipping and Receiving Operations to oversee our expanding portfolio of mail, shipping, and fleet operations. Ed has a strong background managing supply logistics and shipping operations in both corporate and military organizations. Ed will be an important asset in keeping materials flowing around SULAIR. Ed, and the mailroom staff under his direction, will be reporting to Edgar Maxion in his new role as Associate Director for Facilities. Ed’s office is in Green East 132A just outside the mailroom. His phone number is 721-6608 and I am sure he would be happy to have you stop by and say hello.
Please join me in welcoming Ed to SULAIR and congratulating Edgar in his new position.

The Library Open House offers students, faculty, and staff the chance to learn about all our great resources, collections, and services. The event consists of staffed tables representing various units/services, tours, demos, talks, raffle prizes, and much more.
