1. Global Update for SULAIR Web Site, June 20-27, 2008

We will be making some global updates to the SULAIR homepage and to the templates that control the look and functionality of all SULAIR Web pages from June 20-27. The update and the instructions that follow apply to all SULAIR Web sites using the Dreamweaver templates.

To ensure that all pages get updated, please do NOT make any updates to your Web pages between Friday, June 20 at 8:00 PM through midnight on Friday, June 27.

If we are able to complete all updates earlier than June 27, we will notify you by email that the updates are complete and that Web pages can be Checked Out and updated at that time.

We will be making the following global updates and homepage changes:

  • Change link for E-journals in the Red Tool Bar at the top of all pages from TDNet to SFX A-Z journals list. This change is necessitated by our pending change from TDNet to SFX for our A-Z E-journals list.
  • Change Databases dropdown menu to match our current Databases page. The new dropdown choices (in order) for the Databases dropdown list will be:
    o Databases by Subject (default)
    o Databases by Title
o Not Sure Which Database to Use?
  • Create "redirect" URLs for all the links in the Hours & Locations dropdown menu. This will allow us to easily update any links in this dropdown menu without another global update.
  • Add "Federated Search" to the Catalogs and Search Tools column on the homepage. The "More About Catalogs & Search Tools" link in the "Catalogs & Search Tools" column on the homepage will be deleted and replaced with "Federated Search".
  • Change the title of the "News & Events" space on the home page to "Highlights". This space will continue to be used to highlight library collections and resources, as well as for news and events.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Chris Bourg at mchris@stanford.edu.

2. Winners Announced for the Language Lab's First Annual Non-Native Rapper Contest

The Stanford Digital Language Lab announced the winners of its First Annual Non-Native Rapper Contest on June 10th, 2008. To see the student rap videos and contest results, visit the contest site at:

http://youtube.com/nonnativerapper

The Language Lab organized this YouTube contest as part of its mission to facilitate cross-cultural encounters. The event showcases Stanford foreign language students performing original rap numbers in a variety of languages including Japanese, Portuguese, German, and Italian. In addition to writing and performing rhymes, some of the competitors created and performed the musical scores for their videos.

First Place went to Mike Mellenthin (Japanese), 2nd Place to Aaron Zarraga (German), and 3rd Place to Yan Largman and Rachel Liaw (Japanese).

Hip-hop scholar, MC Lars (2005), served as celebrity judge. His final decisions appeared at exactly 12 noon on June 10th on the contest's YouTube site. Winners received iPods, which were generously provided by the Stanford Language Center and the Academic Technology Specialist Program.

The contest site had more than 800 hits and generated comments in multiple languages. The project may be repeated next year with a Non-Native Rap Battle with Cal during big game week.

3. SULAIR Hosts Metadata for You & Me: A Workshop for Sharable Metadata

Metadata for You & Me is a workshop "to assist metadata planners in analyzing and implementing the changes that need to be made to local metadata to prepare it for sharing with aggregations and other institutions", such as DLF Aquifer's American Social History Online.

Jenn Riley (Indiana University) and Sarah Shreeves (University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign) developed the workshop through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Grant Program. They offer the program as an online course and a "road show."

The road show version will come to SULAIR on July 18th, 2008. For more information or to register, visit the workshop Web site at:

4. Christopher Harrison Has Retired

Christopher Harrison, Interlibrary Lending/RLCP Specialist, has retired after over thirty-five years at Stanford University Libraries. In his early career at Stanford, Chris worked in the Stacks Division and as a Circulation Assistant. He supervised the Meyer Basement Loan Desk, before working for Green Loan Division. Chris was a Serials Specialist for the Physics Library, before transferring to Interlibrary Services.

As an Interlibrary Lending and RLCP Specialist, Christopher's contribution to research cannot be fully measured. By completing thousands of interlibrary lending and RLCP requests annually, Christopher's work transformed the requesting scholar's research. Articles and manuscripts were ultimately published, because Christopher Harrison delivered the material patrons required for their research.

We wish Christopher the best of luck in his retirement and thank him for his years of service to Stanford Libraries.

5. Larisa Krasnovsky to Retire from SULAIR on June 30, 2008

After 24 years, Larisa Krasnovsky is retiring from Stanford University to enjoy life at home, with her family (especially with her little grandson) and to do some traveling. Larisa joined the Serials Department in Green Library on May 29, 1984 as a Library Specialist for Slavic materials, and has never really left the world of serials since then. Her many duties over the years included ordering, receiving and claiming Slavic serials, processing incoming exchange materials, dealing with title changes and record maintenance and doing a lot of problem solving -- always working very closely with the Slavic materials bibliographers.

Many of us have had the pleasure of working with Larisa as we went through various departmental re-organizations and re-assignments of duties, and she has had almost as many supervisors as she had years of service, including Peter Kim, Leilani Freund, Vicki Reich, Rose Mendoza, Suzanne McMahon, Sharon Propas, Brigitte Burnham, Dalene Hawthorne and Linh Chang.

We want to thank Larisa for her many years of faithful service and dedication. We will miss her vast knowledge, her professionalism, her go to attitude and always smiling face.

Larisa has requested that we not have a big send-off party for her, but she would love for you to stop by her desk and say good-bye over the next couple of weeks.

We wish Larisa all the very best of everything and a wonderful new chapter of life as she enters the world of retirement. We will miss her dearly!

6. ***Reference Question of the Week ***

Question: Where can I find the papers of the Founders/Framers of the United States Constitution?

Answer: A good place to start is the Stanford Libraries' US History Collections Page for Colonial/Revolutionary History. Here is the link to the section on Founders' Documents. There are links to digital papers, as well as call numbers for items which are not digital.

As far as digital collections go, there are two good database sources: Thomas (from the Library of Congress) and The Avalon Project (from Yale University Law School). The Avalon Project main page has a search function. You can start by linking to pre-18th Century documents, and then search for Framers, and you will find many documents discussing the intent of the Framers even in the 18th century!

You can find more reference questions and answers at the Information Center Web site.

To contribute to the Reference Question of the Week feature of SULAIR News, submit your question and answer through the SULAIR News online submission form.
