1. To Choose Freedom: Soviet Dissidents and Their Supporters Exhibit
A new exhibit, To Choose Freedom: Soviet Dissidents and Their Supporters, opened in April in conjunction with an international symposium Building on Success: The Soviet Dissident Movement and American Foreign Policy during the 1980s, organized by former dissident and Hoover distinguished visiting fellow Yuri Yarim-Agaev. The exhibit, inspired by Yarim-Agaev, draws on many collections from the Hoover Library and Archives and focuses on the struggle for human rights in the last decades of the Soviet Union.
Highlights include Yarim-Agaev's notes taken in Moscow's Lefortovo prison during his interrogation by the KGB, two days before he was expelled from the Soviet Union in 1980, and a photograph of President Ronald Reagan welcoming him and recently released Yuri Orlov to the White House the day before Reagan was to meet with Mikhail Gorbachev in Reykjavik in October 1986; a 1977 hour-long interview of former dissident and symposium participant Vladimir Bukovskii by the late William F. Buckley on Firing Line; a tiny version of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago for underground circulation; a photograph of Anatoly Shcharansky crossing the Glienicke Bridge in Berlin in 1986, walking towards freedom after eleven years of incarceration; a photograph of Arina Ginzburg, wife of imprisoned dissident Aleksandr Ginzburg, calling the U.S. embassy in Moscow from a phone booth while a KGB woman watches; an exchange of New Year's greetings in 1985/1986 between Andrei Sakharov (still confined in Gorki) and Sidney Drell, American physicist and Hoover senior fellow and an ardent champion of Sakharov.
The Herbert Hoover Memorial Exhibit Pavilion is located next to the Hoover Tower at Stanford University and this exhibit runs through October 25th, 2008, Tuesday through Saturday, 11am to 4pm. Free admission, open to the public.

Over-the-counter sales are available from 7:30 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. For information about the Commute Club or to request help planning your alternative commute, send an email to commuteclub@stanford.edu.

4. New Staff for University Archives
The University Archives is Stanford's most important instrument for preserving its history as well as the legacies of its faculty and alumni. Stanford's dramatic expansion of its academic programs and research activities in recent years has brought new challenges for the Archives' program of collection development. While fundraising for the endowment of the University Archivist is underway, the Office of the President has recognized the immediate need for increased staffing in the Archives to meet these challenges. Two positions, Assistant University Archivist and Archives Specialist, have been funded for eighteen months. We are pleased to announce the following appointments to these positions.
Assistant University Archivist
Aimee L. Morgan has been appointed as Assistant University Archivist effective September 2, 2008. Aimee will report to and work with Maggie Kimball, University Archivist, in the Department of Special Collections & University Archives. Aimee received her Master of Science in Information Science and Master of Arts in History from the University at Albany, State University of New York with concentrations in archives and records administration and U.S. social and cultural history. She received her undergraduate degree in English from Cornell University. Aimee will come to Stanford from the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco where she served as the archives and digital collections librarian. Prior to her San Francisco position, Aimee served as the curator of archives and manuscripts at the Pitts Theology Library, Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Aimee is professionally active in the Society of American Archivists and the Society of California Archivists.
University Archives Specialist
Jennifer E. Johnson joined the staff of the Stanford University Archives April 21st as Archives Specialist and hit the ground running during a busy spring quarter. Jenny reports to Maggie Kimball and works closely with other University Archives staff in the Department of Special Collections and University Archives. Jenny received her MLIS from San Jose State and her BA in political science from Cal State Hayward. Jenny came to Stanford from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art where she was Visual Resources Specialist. Prior to becoming an archivist, Jenny worked four years at Southwest Airlines, where she oversaw the staffing of ground operations for nine airports. Her experience handling challenges on so many different fronts prepared her well for dealing with the variety of activities and users in the Stanford University Archives. Jenny is a member of the Society of American Archivists and the Society of California Archivists.
Please join Special Collections & University Archives in welcoming Aimee and Jennifer to Stanford.

6. Shinjoung Yeo Accepts Full Fellowship to GSLiS at UIUC
Shinjoung Yeo will be leaving SULAIR to become an Information in Society Doctoral Fellow at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her last day with SULAIR will be August 15.
Shinjoung came to SULAIR in December of 2005 and has served as Coordinator for Reference and Outreach in the Information Center and as Bibliographer for Communication and Journalism. In her 2 ½ years with SULAIR, Shinjoung has made numerous significant contributions to the IC, the SSRG, and SULAIR. She spearheaded efforts to create a new, interactive IC Website, using the Drupal content management system. The success of the IC website has led to wider adoption of the Drupal platform across SULAIR. Shinjoung also initiated Chat/IM reference, created and sustained the wildly popular Reference Forum and revitalized the IC reference collection.
As Bibliographer for Communication and Journalism, she coordinated the extremely successful Whole Earth Symposium, provided research assistance to countless graduate students and faculty, and co-taught courses with department faculty.
Please join me in thanking Shinjoung for her many contributions to SULAIR and in wishing her the best of luck in her new adventure at UIUC.

7. *** Reference Question of the Week ***
Question: I came by the library today to seek help
finding some information related to NATO. In particular, I am looking
for statistics on NATO's Implementation Force (IFOR), Stabilization
Force (SFOR), and the Kosovo Force (KFOR), all of which took place in
the Balkans in the early 1990s. I am interested in how much money and
how many troops did NATO countries commit to those three operations.
Even though it is easy to get the numbers for the US, other countries
are somewhat more difficult. NATO does not have that kind of
information on its website either. Thus, I was wondering if you could
direct me to some sources?
Answer: There are 3 angles to think about in tackling this question: 1) statistics; 2) the organizations themselves (in this case NATO and the United Nations); and 3) Secondary scholarly literature.
LexisNexis Statistical database
(Stanford only) is a good place to start. If you're on campus, that
link should go right through, or perhaps ask you for your SUNET
id/password. If you're off campus, you'll want to set up the proxy in your browser.
If you search LN statistical for NATO and allied contributions, you'll
find an annual report to Congress on allied contributions to NATO going
back to 1985. Hopefully, that report will have all the information you
need. I also found a table for "Defense Spending As A Percentage Of
GDP, 1990-2001 [U.S., NATO Allies, Pacific Allies, And Gulf Cooperation
Council, By Country]" issued by the Office of the Secretary of Defense and several others from the DoD.
