1. Library Open House on Thursday, October 2, 2pm-6pm

As Fall Quarter begins, be sure to let your colleagues and our patrons know that there will be a Library Open House on Thursday, October 2, 2pm-6pm.

This year's Library Open House will take place in and around the Green Library East lobby. There will be tables and displays in front of Green Library and in the Green East lobby, highlighting SULAIR's services and resources. Participants will include dozens of campus libraries, Special Collections, the Media MicroText Center, SULAIR in Second Life, CourseWork and many more.

We'll have tours of Green Library (led by Michael Keller), and of the Robotic Book Scanner, as well as short presentations on SULAIR in Second Life, the Google Books project, and more. There will be music, movies, and great raffle prizes.

Please check the Library Open House Web site for more information:

2. Clean-Air/Carpool Credit Reminder from Parking and Transportation

If you were a Clean-Air-Cash Commute Club member during the summer quarter (June 2008 through August 2008), you should have received Clean Air Cash this month in the amount of $58.50 for the quarter or $19.50 for each month you were a member.

If you were a Carpool Commute Club member with three or more people in your "C" carpool or four or more people in your "A" carpool in 2007-08, you should have received a payment this month. In 2007-08, carpools received "Carpool Credit" of $19.50 per month for each member other than the primary member. Carpool Credit in excess of the permit price is shared among the carpool members and is paid at the end of the academic year.

To confirm your Clean Air Cash or Carpool Credit deposit, check your university pay statement on or around September 4.

If you have questions, send an email to commuteclub@stanford.edu. If you're not in the Commute Club but want to receive Clean Air Cash or Carpool Credit, see if you are eligible to join and learn more: http://transportation.stanford.edu/commuteclub.

4. *** Reference Question of the Week ***

Question: I am doing a paper on California following World War I, through the 1930s, and I need some original resources, especially current news coverage for the period. I would like to be able to browse as broad a selection of materials as possible, to get a sense of the times. Where can I find these materials at Stanford?

Answer: There is a significant body of news materials, post-World War I, for California available electronically on the ProQuest Historical Newspapers. Note that you have access to both the Los Angeles Times and the San Francisco Chronicle by using the drop down menu on this site. However, as you seem to wish to get the broadest possible view of culture in California for this period, I suggest that you do considerable browsing in our microfilm collection of California newspapers. Many of these materials haven't yet been digitalized. Unfortunately, the cataloging for daily and weekly newspapers is very spotty, so no general search in Socrates will retrieve a complete result. Your best search strategy will be:

  • Use the Combined Search on Socrates.
  • Put a city name, such as Los Angeles or San Francisco or Sacramento, in the Periodical Title box at the bottom of the search form.
  • Pick Green as the Library and Media/Microtext as the Green Location.
  • Date limits work very badly within Socrates for periodical searches, so avoid such a limit.

You will need to browse a number of records, in the Details display, to find the actual coverage of a particular item. The dates on the short display in Socrates have little meaning, usually being the start date of that particular incarnation of the title.

Within the Combined Search of Socrates, as more and more things become digitalized, you will be able to locate these materials by clicking on the Electronic Resources tab at the top of the search form and using city names within the Periodical Title box of the search. However, currently, a great deal of good historical materials are still only in microform. For a good cross-check on possible resources, you can do a simple Subject search in Socrates for: California newspapers bibliography. These will not be the newspapers themselves, but will be lists that you can check, by title, in Socrates.

You can find more reference questions and answers at the Information Center Web site.
