1. Library Open House Is Tomorrow!

The Library Open House is tomorrow; Thursday, October 2, 2pm-6pm!

This year's Library Open House will take place in and around the Green Library East lobby. There will be tables and displays in front of Green Library and in the Green East lobby, highlighting SULAIR's services and resources. Participants will include dozens of campus libraries, Special Collections, the Media MicroText Center, SULAIR in Second Life, CourseWork and many more.

We'll have tours of Green Library (led by Michael Keller), and of the Robotic Book Scanner, as well as short presentations on SULAIR in Second Life, the Google Books project, and more. There will be music, movies, and great raffle prizes.

3. *** Reference Question of the Week ***

Question: I am looking for literature on domestic workers in the U.S. and their working conditions. Can you give me some ideas about where to start?

Answer: I recommend searching Socrates using terms such as "immigrant workers" and "women" (depending what you're looking for). You'll find many useful books, such as Doméstica: immigrant workers cleaning and caring in the shadows of affluence by Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo. Those records contain subject headings such as "Women domestics" and "Domestics United States;" you can expand your search using these subject headings.

Also, you can find newspaper and journal articles by using the following databases (all of which are available only to Stanford users):

  • Ethnic News Watch has newspapers and periodicals published by the ethnic, minority, and native press in the U.S., starting in 1960.
  • Contemporary Women's issues has articles from numerous periodicals about various women's issues.
  • Policyfile provides abstracts and articles about public policy research and analysis from think tanks, university research programs, and research organizations.
  • LexisNexis offers access to current U.S. and international news, federal documents, law journals, etc.
  • Sociological Abstracts has research literature in the social and behavioral sciences.
