1. Library Open House a Huge Success

Hundreds of students, faculty and staff showed up at Green Library yesterday for the annual Library Open House. This was our most ambitious Open House ever, with over 30 libraries and library services represented. Attendees saw demos of SULAIR in Second Life, Google Book Search, our Robotic Book Scanner, The Future of the Science Libraries, How They Got Game, and much more. A huge crowd followed University Librarian Michael Keller on a special tour of Green.

The most popular attraction seemed to be the hundreds of Free Books available. Students flocked to the book trucks loaded with books nominated for our William Saroyan International Prize for Writing.

A huge thank you to the folks who helped plan and publicize this event: Eleanor Brown, Kelly Fields, Edgar Maxion, Glen Worthey, Helen Josephine, Ronnie Fields, Deni Wicklund, Mimi Calter, Mattie Taormina, Sarah Seestone, and Judy Marsh.

3. Exhibition at the East Asia Library

The East Asia Library invites all SULAIR staff to the Special Exhibition of Hangul (Korean Alphabet) Calligraphy. The exhibition will feature Hangul calligraphy works donated by eleven established Korean female calligraphers.

East Asia Library
Meyer Library, 4th Floor
October 9 - 31, 2008

Hangul
is the native alphabet of the Korean language. Promulgated in 1446 by Sejong the Great (1397-1450), fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty, it was originally known as Hunmin jeongeum ("Proper Sounds for the Instruction of the People"). The original Hunmin jeongeum manuscript has been registered with the UNESCO program, "Memory of the World," since October 1997.

After the creation of Hunmin jeongeum, the shape of Hangul gradually further developed in its use for woodblock-printed books and for practical everyday manuscripts. Today's Hangul calligraphy as a formative art began around 1910.

We hope you enjoy Hangul as an art form through this exhibition.

4. Welcome Helenna Li

Please join me in welcoming Helenna Li to her new role as Electronic Resources Specialist in the Acquisitions Department.

Helenna started at Stanford as an intern at Falconer Biology Library. Since then, she has had a broad range of experience in the Stanford Libraries, working for the Aquifer project, the Digital Library team, and most recently Acquisitions Monograph Receiving. She received a Master of Library and Information Science from San Jose State University.

Beginning October 16, Helenna will be helping support the discovery, representation, and ongoing access of SULAIR's rapidly expanding electronic resource collections, as part of the Electronic Resources Unit.

5. Thanks to All SULAIR Staff

Very belated but heartfelt thanks for the many good wishes, hugs, great conversations and goodbyes, fantastic food (especially the cake), that were received at my retirement party on Tuesday, 9/30. I have loved working with each and every one of you over 41 years, but I really won't miss getting up at 6 AM any longer.....

Cheers,
Kathy

6. *** Reference Question of the Week ***

Question: How do I find issues of The San Francisco Chronicle?

Answer: The best way to find current issues is to find the title in Socrates and use the link on the left to the database America's Newspapers, which includes issues from 1985 to the present. Some articles will be in Lexis/Nexis. We also have microfilm going back to the beginning (1865) in Media Microtext. We keep the hardcopy in the Information Center until we receive the microfilm.

For older issues (1865-1922 so far), go to databases and search by title San Francisco Chronicle; it is one of the ProQuest Historical Newspapers.

You can find more reference questions and answers at the Information Center Web site.

To contribute to the Reference Question of the Week feature of SULAIR News, submit your question and answer through the SULAIR News online submission form.
