1. Katherine Kott New Manager of Strategic Digital Projects and Organizational Development
I'm very pleased to announce that Katherine Kott is joining DLSS (Digital Library Systems and Services) as the Manager of Strategic Digital Projects and Organizational Development, with oversight of the Stanford Digital Repository (SDR). Katherine's first day will be November 20th, and she will begin at 50% time as she transitions out of her role as the DLF Aquifer director over the next several months.
This role marks Katherine's second coming to SULAIR, where she served as Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services from 2003 to 2005. Before that, she had a five year stint at the library software vendor, Innovative Interfaces, Inc., where she directed their implementation services. And before that, she had many years of experience in both hands-on and managerial roles in libraries across the United States.
Since 2005, Katherine has served as the director of the DLF Aquifer Initiative, where she has helped formulate and guide an inter-institutional effort to define and build a distributed digital library. Across her many roles, she has demonstrated a practical ability to make the possible real, to redefine how work gets done, and to focus on people and service as much as she does on process and results.
I very much look forward to Katherine's contributions to SDR and DLSS. She will be a terrific addition to the team, and another strong contributor to our collective efforts to keep SULAIR at the forefront of research libraries in excellence and innovation.
Please join me in welcoming Katherine back to SULAIR.

2. SULAIR Acronyms
I'm thinking of starting a SULAIR Acronym "Cheat-Sheet" similar to http://www.stanford.edu/about/speak.html. Could you help me by emailing me (renee.mueller@stanford.edu) any SULAIR acronyms you've learned along the way? I know I cannot be the only one out there stumped by "Library Speak" every so often! Thank you!

3. *** Reference Question of the Week ***
Question: I am looking for data on cultivable land area in Latin America between 1950 and 1990. The World Bank (WDI) has time-series data on arable but not cultivable land.
Answer: For an international statistical question, start with the following databases (available to Stanford students on the Databases page under the subjects "Government Information: International and Foreign" and "Statistics and Numeric Data"):
The UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is also a good place to check. Their FAOSTAT statistical database has cross sectional data relating to food and agriculture for about 200 countries.
