1. Faculty Senate Approves Library Planning Process

On November 13, Stanford's Faculty Senate approved a proposal to analyze the cost and feasibility of revitalizing Stanford's library system and voted to initiate a planning process for the libraries.

A team is now being established to undertake this two-year process, which will focus on the recommendations put forward by the Committee on Libraries's (C-LIB) Subcommittee on Digital Information Technologies in the Research Library Environment at Stanford. That subcommittee was convened in 2007 to review issues arising from the impending demolition of Meyer Library, particularly the impact on collections written in non-Roman characters.

C-LIB and the planning Team welcome your input into this planning process. You can provide input and find the subcommittee's final report and other documents assembled for the Faculty Senate at:

2. Vicki Pearse Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

After Vicki Pearse retired from her research position at UC Santa Cruz, she returned to Hopkins Marine Station where she had studied for her Ph.D. and met her husband, John, who is also a Stanford graduate. Now she works a couple of days a week on special projects and helps keep the Miller Library running when Don and I are away.

Last week, Vicki and John received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Western Society of Naturalist conference in Vancouver. If you go to http://www.wsn-online.org/laaward.shtml, you can read more about Vicki and John.

It is difficult to make out, but the bucket in the photo says "Hopkins Marine Station."

3. *** Reference Question of the Week ***

Question: How can I locate the Solicitor's Opinion from the Dept. of the Interior from 1980 (M-36921)?

Answer: This document can be found as part of the Decisions of the United States Department of the Interior (you can search this as a title in Socrates). The detailed record shows a link to an online resource provided by the University of Michigan. The specific document is in v.87, p.291-304, and you can view a .pdf version. Alternately, the Law Library has this on microfiche.

You can find more reference questions and answers at the Information Center Web site.

To contribute to the Reference Question of the Week feature of SULAIR News, submit your question and answer through the SULAIR News online submission form.
