1. Link to Libraries on Stanford Home Page

Following discussions about adding a "Libraries" link to the Stanford home page, Stanford's Web Communications office has added the link. It appears in the right sidebar on the Stanford home page.

Links to the Stanford University Libraries also appear in the following locations within the top-level University Web site:

2. Winter Has Arrived on the Coast

It is rare that we get snow down at Hopkins Marine Station. There was hail covering cars when I walked into work on Tuesday morning. I was able to take this photo showing the Miller Library with Mt. Toro in the background covered with snow.

Best wishes to all for a wonderful Holiday from Joe, Don, and Vicki.

Regular Marguerite service, including Shopping Express and Midnight Express, will be suspended during the campus winter closure, scheduled from Dec. 20, 2008 through Jan. 2, 2009. Regular service will resume on Jan. 3. Please note the following service changes during the winter break:

  • There will be limited service to Stanford Hospital, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, and Palo Alto Transit Center during the campus closure (view map and schedule [PDF, 175 KB].
  • The Medical Center Loop and Medical Center to VA/Hillview shuttles will operate on their regular schedules during the closure, including weekday holidays.
  • The Research Park shuttle and AC Transit's Line U also will operate on their regular schedules during the closure, except on holidays (Dec. 25 and Jan. 1) when the service will be unavailable. Please note that the Ardenwood Express will NOT be running during the winter closure.
Alternatives to the Marguerite shuttle during the winter closure include Zipcar car sharing at Stanford and Enterprise Rent-A-Car on campus. Please note that the campus Enterprise office will close at 3 p.m. on Dec. 24 and will be closed all day from Dec. 25 through Dec. 28 and also on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

5. Bus and Train Passes Now Available

The 2009 GO Pass and Eco Pass are now available at the P&TS office. These passes provide free transit for eligible hospital and/or university employees.

The 2009 GO Pass and Eco Pass, which provide free transit for eligible employees, are now available at the Parking & Transportation Services office. The GO Pass allows eligible university employees to ride Caltrain for free. The Eco Pass allows eligible hospital and university employees to ride VTA buses, express buses, and light rail for free. You can check to see if you meet the eligibility requirements.

Please note that the passes must be picked up in person, must be affixed to an eligible Stanford employee ID to be valid, and cannot be transferred to another person. Fraudulent use or transfer of these passes may result in confiscation, substantial fines, and a ban on participation in the program.

The 2009 GO Pass will be accepted by Caltrain during December 2008. There is no grace period to ride Caltrain at the beginning of the year. Caltrain requires riders to have a 2009 GO Pass beginning Jan. 1, 2009. The 2009 Eco Pass is not valid during December 2008. For riders with a valid 2008 pass, the VTA offers a grace period through Jan. 11, 2009.

6. *** Reference Question of the Week ***

Question: Are there resources to help me decide which charities to contribute to? Is it safe to donate online?

Answer: The most well-known online evaluation source is Charity Navigator, which has ratings of over 2500 charities in the U.S., as well as Guidelines for Savvy Donors and other useful resources. The American Institution of Philanthropy charges for a report of about 500 charities, but freely lists 150 of the top-rated charities. They also have advice on how to compare charities and give wisely.

For legal information, searching in Socrates under the subject Income tax deductions for charitable contributions retrieves 158 titles, including Charitable gift planning: a practical guide for the estate planner. Other books can be found using subject headings Charitable giving and Philanthropists United States.

You can find more reference questions and answers at the Information Center Web site.

To contribute to the Reference Question of the Week feature of SULAIR News, submit your question and answer through the SULAIR News online submission form.
