1. Attention Dreamweaver Users: Check Out Files Before Editing Them
Over the next few weeks, we will be adding a bit of code to many pages on the library.stanford.edu site to help gather statistics. Please make sure that you check out files before you edit them, so you have the latest version from the server.
If you don't know how to do a check-out, see the section Updating Files in SULAIR's Web Authors document about using your Dreamweaver site.

2. SULAIR Goes Super Green
The Sustainable IT team has just produced a very heartening report on SULAIR's contribution to saving money and the environment.
Two weeks ago, SULAIR's Big Fix console team deployed a change to SULAIR's PC computers via Big Fix, changing each computer's power settings to the "Super Green" level, which puts the machine to sleep when it is idle. The Office of Sustainability estimates that this setting saves $50 per computer per year in avoided energy costs. The SULAIR BigFix console team includes Deni Wicklund, Ronnie Fields, Laura Keller, Rob Smith, and Dean Steede.
With a push of a single button, the team deployed the setting to 515 machines overnight. This moved SULAIR from 18th on the list of departments who have deployed power saving settings to 8th (with 73% of our computers now covered).
According to Joyce Dickerson, Director of Sustainable IT, it will also save the University an estimated $25,750 over the course of one year. This is a significant portion of the roughly $200,000 that they estimate these power settings are saving the University annually.
And at this point, SULAIR is the first and only department to go "Super Green".

3. Organizational Change Workshops
With schools and departments across campus likely to begin staff reorganizations in response to tight economic times, Learning and Development, a department in Human Resources, is sponsoring workshops to help employees understand the effects of organizational changes. Two versions of the workshops will be offered over the next two months—one for managers and supervisors, and one for staff.
Navigating through Organizational Change (3.5 hours) provides the opportunity to learn how to effectively deal with change by re-channeling uncertainty into taking charge of what is within your personal control.
Leading through Organizational Change (4.5 hours) helps supervisors and managers learn how to manage themselves through the change while understanding reactions from their staff, and strategies to increase effectiveness in leading team members through change.
Workshop descriptions and calendar are at http://ld.stanford.edu/change.html. Enroll through Axess, using STARS: https://axess.stanford.edu.

4. Town Hall Meetings on Changes to Retirement Savings Plans (TDA and SCRP)
In February, all staff should have received a letter from Benefits announcing changes to the investment options available through SCRP and TDA. Benefits encourages you to attend a Town Hall meeting to learn more about these upcoming changes. Presented by a member of the Benefits staff, you will learn about the new investment options, how they work, and why the changes are being put into place.
Seating is now on a first come, first served basis; enrollment through STARS is not necessary.

5. *** Reference Question of the Week ***
Question: Can you offer me advice for doing exploratory research on ethics and the pharmaceutical industry?
Answer: To get some overall ideas about the topic, you might want to start with journal and newspaper articles. There's a database called Academic Search Premier (available to Stanford users) which includes scholarly journals and popular magazines. Use search terms like "pharmaceutical industry" and "ethics."
For newspaper articles, try the following three databases (available to Stanford users):
Alt-PressWatch: newspapers, magazines, and journals of the alternative and independent press.
America's Newspapers: full-text content of local and regional news, including community events, government policies, and cultural activities.
Lexis Nexis: transcripts of radio and TV programs, law review journals, government documents, etc.
We also have subject-specific databases. Since your topic is related to business and medicine, you might try:
ABI/INFORM (available only to Stanford users)
Business Source Complete (available only to Stanford users)
PubMed
