1. Reference Forum - Wednesday, April 15 - What's New with Google Books

One of our originally scheduled Reference Forum presenters this week has answered the call of duty (jury duty, that is). As a result we will reschedule the "Music to Your Ears" Reference Forum for a later date.

The Reference Forum will be today from 2:00-3:00p.m. in the SSRC Seminar Room.

For this week's Reference Forum, we will discuss "What's New with Google Books." For background reading, I suggest this excellent 7-page summary of the proposed GBS Lawsuit Settlement: Impact of the Google Book Settlement on Libraries (PDF).

We will also discuss new content and functionality at Google Books, as well as recent feedback from Stanford undergraduates about how they use GBS.  Please come with your own stories of how you have used GBS, as well as your questions.

If you would like to be on the email distribution list for future Reference Forum announcements, please go to https://mailman.stanford.edu/mailman/listinfo/libref-forum and Subscribe to the list.

2. Upcoming AlertSU Test on Saturday, April 18

There will be another test of the University's emergency-notification system, AlertSU, on Saturday, April 18. On that day at noon, the system will send test messages to the phone numbers and e-mail addresses of all staff and faculty listed in the StanfordWho directory and to the contact points of all students listed in Axess.

Because a crisis can strike at any time, emergency management staff decided to take this opportunity to test the system outside of normal business hours. All students and employees, including staff classified as temporary or casual, should update their directory information before April 17.

Faculty and staff may make changes by going to http://stanfordyou.stanford.edu/ and selecting "Maintain your directory and AlertSU emergency contact information." Students should update their directory information by going to http://axess.stanford.edu/.

If a home phone number is listed, anyone home during the time of the test will get the alert. The message will not require a response. In the event of a major emergency, AlertSU can send out important announcements simultaneously via phone, e-mail and text message.

April is also earthquake-preparedness month in California, and April 18 marks the 103rd anniversary of the Great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. This is a perfect opportunity to review your departmental and personal emergency preparedness plans to ensure that you and your family are prepared for an emergency.

For more information about the AlertSU system, go to http://alertsu.stanford.edu/ or visit the Environmental Health & Safety Web site at http://ehs.stanford.edu/ for information about campus emergency plans.

3. Updates to Libraries' Hours Academic Year 2008-09

Several libraries have changed their hours since the beginning of Fall Quarter 2009, when the Libraries' Hours for Academic Year 2008-09 were published and printed copies were distributed. This includes the Physics, Jackson, and Lane libraries. The Libraries' Hours Web page and associated PDF reflect these changes, but the blue printed copies do not. To get printed copies that include the current hours, print from the PDF that is linked from the top of the Libraries' Hours Web page.

4. Don Kohrs Completes Library Degree

Please join me in congratulating Don Kohrs who completed his Masters in Library & Information Science at San Jose State University. He officially graduated in December, but the diploma just arrived this week. This, with his biology background, makes a great combination for supporting the needs of the Hopkins Marine Station patrons.

5. *** Reference Question of the Week ***

Question: Where can I find resources and images for my research on advertising?

Answer: There are many good books and reference sources about advertising as well, many of which are at the business school. You can find these through Socrates. One particularly useful subject heading is Advertising Campaigns. Another good place to start is the Encyclopedia of Major Marketing Campaigns.

The Graduate School of Business has a Research Guide on the Advertising Industry with links to databases and image sources. The Research Quick Start Guide to Image Sources has a great section on advertising images. Stanford librarians have evaluated and collected web resources using del.icio.us (social bookmarking software) that you can use for your research. Check tags relevant to your topic, such as advertising and business.

You can find more reference questions and answers at the Information Center Web site.

To contribute to the Reference Question of the Week feature of SULAIR News, submit your question and answer through the SULAIR News online submission form.
