2. Bike to Work Day is Thursday, May 14

Make a difference! Get ready to bike and/or walk to work on Thursday, May 14, as we celebrate the greenest ways to commute. Stop by one of the eight Stanford Energizer Stations between 6:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. where you can take a break and pick up a re-usable bag and snacks while supplies last (compliments of Bike to Work Day sponsors: Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, and the Bay Area Bicycle Coalition).

Stanford Energizer Stations include the following locations (6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.):

  1. White Plaza
  2. Galvez near El Camino Real
  3. Campus Drive at Santa Teresa
  4. Palm Drive at Arboretum
  5. Serra near El Camino Real
  6. Stanford Hospital (Clark Center/Dean's Lawn)
  7. Stanford Hospital (Hospital Fountain)
  8. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory
More Bay Area stations are listed at the Silicon Valley Bike Coalition Web site: http://bikesiliconvalley.org/btwd/energizerstation.

Remember to wear a helmet every time you ride. For bike safety tips and more, visit http://transportation.stanford.edu/alt_transportation/BikingAtStanford.shtml#bikesafety.

Consider joining the Team Bike Challenge. Enter teams of two to five people. You don't need to ride together to log your rides. For more information, visit http://bikesiliconvalley.org/btwd/companybikechallenge.

If you have questions about biking or need a bike commute plan, please send an email to information@stanford.edu or call 650.725.2453.

3. New Art & Architecture Library Web Site

The Art & Architecture Library has launched a preview of its new Drupal-based Web site, produced in partnership with Digital Library Systems and Services. Visit the site at http://lib.stanford.edu/art/ or via the Libraries and Collections A-Z page.

The Library's aim, in creating the new site, was to develop a dynamic environment for frequent updates and distributed content creation, and to establish a platform for highlighting its unique collections in different ways. It is a work in progress; feedback is welcome!

Special thanks to Stu Snydman, Jessie Keck, Jennifer Vine, and Jon Lavigne for their superb guidance and support.

4. Zimride Expands Ridesharing Application to All Stanford Users

You may have heard that Zimride allows Stanford affiliates to use Facebook to find a carpool match – for one trip or for ongoing commutes. Now, Zimride offers their carpool application to all Stanford affiliates, even those without a Facebook account.

There are more than 1,800 Stanford Zimride users. The Zimride application enables you to limit your rideshare matches to the Stanford community or broaden your search to the entire Zimride community. The choice is yours.

Stanford students, staff, and faculty can join for free, and those who post a ride offer or request a ride between now and May 25 will be entered in a drawing for an iPod Shuffle or a $50 gas card, compliments of Zimride. Learn more and sign up at http://zimride.stanford.edu.

If you have a question about Zimride, carpooling, or if you would like to request an alternative commute plan, please send an email to commuteclub@stanford.edu or call 650.723.9362.

6. Stanford Open Office Hours Comes to Facebook

Stanford University is bringing office hours to Facebook by spotlighting world-class faculty on its Stanford University Facebook profile.

On Thursday, the latest session will feature psychology Professor Emeritus Philip Zimbardo, who came to international fame with the Stanford Prison Experiment, a classic demonstration of how power distorts personal values, personal identity and individual morality, both in the power-holders and the victims. However, the last chapter in his 2007 book, The Lucifer Effect: Understanding How Good People Turn Evil, introduced the newest direction in Zimbardo's research: What makes ordinary people act heroically, even as those around them succumb to evil? He is also the founder of the Stanford Shyness Clinic, and the author of last year's The Time Paradox: The New Psychology of Time That Will Change.

7. *** Reference Question of the Week ***

Question: I am looking for a short story that I know is in the anthology Best American Short Stories, 2002. Stanford does not have this volume. Do you know of any other anthology that might contain the story?

Answer: To search for a story in a book, search for the title of the story as a keyword instead of as a title. In Socrates, put quotes around the title to search as a phrase. If you don't find the story in a Socrates search, try another catalog, like Worldcat or Melvyl (the UC catalog).

You can find more reference questions and answers at the Information Center Web site.

To contribute to the Reference Question of the Week feature of SULAIR News, submit your question and answer through the SULAIR News online submission form.
