1. Stanford Students Awarded Wreden Prize for Collecting Books

At a reception on June 1, Michael Keller announced the 2009 awards of Stanford's Byra J. and William P. Wreden Prize for Collecting Books and Related Materials:

  • Senior Ruth McCann won first prize ($2500) for "Finding and Keeping Olivia," on her collection of printed editions of Olivia by Dorothy Strachey.
  • Sophomore Joshua Aidan Dunn won second prize ($1,000) for an untitled essay describing his collection on transgender community dialogues.
  • Freshman Robbie Zimbroff received special mention ($500) for "Steinbeck's Scarf," on his collection of works by and about John Steinbeck.
The Wreden prize is offered every two or three years and the contest is open to all Stanford students in a degree program. Contestants must submit an essay and a bibliography.

Michael Keller expressed great satisfaction with this year's entries: “The essays were superbly crafted, as we expect from Stanford students, but beyond that were inspiring and insightful, even to readers who have collected for decades.”

Funding for the prize comes from the Byra J. and William P. Wreden endowment, a Stanford Libraries fund designated for this purpose.

For more information, see the Stanford Libraries' press release (PDF), the June 3 Stanford Report article, or the related Special Collections Web page.

2. Cubberley Education Library for the Summer

There seems to be some confusion about what is happening at Cubberley this summer. Yes, they are doing a retrofit, but we will be open--just not on the second floor. Everything in our regular collection will be in the basement. We will be paging it and escorting scholars who wish to browse the shelf.  There are online request forms in Socrates and we will be in Room 115 in the School of Education Building starting June 16. That's a conference room right next to the women's restroom.

For more on the retrofit, check out our Web pages at http://cubb.stanford.edu. Staff offices will be located in Green SSRC for the summer. Construction is supposed to be completed by the end of September. Questions? Feel free to call my cell at 996-0592.

3. You No Longer Need a Facebook Account to Use Zimride

Zimride at Stanford is a carpool application that makes it easier to share your commute or one-time trips with other members of the Stanford community – and now, you no longer need a Facebook account to use it. Zimride can now be used with or without Facebook. Users who post their commute or even post one-time rides or requests before June 30 will be entered to win a $50 gas card or an iPod shuffle from Zimride.

There are currently more than 2,200 Stanford Zimride users and more than 1,000 Stanford rides posted. Here’s how it works. Have a car? Add your ride offer and reduce your costs by sharing your ride with fellow Stanford affiliates. Don't have a car? Add your ride request and find a ride where you need to go. With Zimride, you choose whether or not to accept a match once you have reviewed the profile of your Stanford ride match.

Sign up at http://zimride.stanford.edu. To learn more, visit http://transportation.stanford.edu/zimride. If you have questions, please send an email to commuteclub@stanford.edu.
