1. Changes to Library Publications and Outreach Activities

Due to recent budget cuts, the following changes have been made in Stanford University Libraries’ publications and library outreach activities:

  • We have ceased publication of Imprint, a semi-annual publication originally published under the auspices of the Libraries’ Associates, and more recently published under the auspices of the Department of Special Collections and University Archives. The last issue of Imprint is the Spring 2009 issue, Volume 27 Number 1.
  • We have eliminated bulk printing of Library Hours, Libraries’ maps, and postcard announcements for Speaking of Computers. These publications are all available online and may be printed on demand:
  • We will greatly reduce the number and size of print ads placed in the Stanford Daily for events such as new student tours, Winter closure, and graduation.
  • We have canceled the 2009 Library Open House.

2. Maria Grandinette Receives Award from the American Institute for Conservation.

The American Institute for Conservation awarded Maria Grandinette the Rutherford John Gettens Award for outstanding service at the annual AIC conference in Los Angeles on May 19, 2009.

Throughout her career in conservation, Maria has made many important contributions to the AIC. In particular, she was cited for founding the Library Collections Conservation Discussion Group with her colleague Randy Silverman. As co-founder and co-chair of the LCCDG, Maria has provided an invaluable forum for library conservators to exchange ideas. This forum has become one of the most relevant and important sessions for library conservators attending AIC, and has raised awareness of conservation issues and needs that are unique to their institutions.

The award also recognizes her work with the Task Force on Collections Care Professionals. As Chair of the Task Force, Maria helped to establish professional standards for conservation technicians which led to one of AIC’s core documents, Requisite Competencies for Conservation Technicians and Collections Care Specialists.

Let us congratulate and thank Maria for her many contributions that ensure such a high standard of care for collections at Stanford and beyond.

4. *** Reference Question of the Week ***

Question: Can Stanford Library help me appraise the value of a book?

Answer: Book appraisal services are not offered by the Stanford University Libraries, but staff members offer the following suggestions for getting the valuation of old books on your own:

  • If you are in the San Francisco Bay area, here is a resource that our staff uses: The Brick Row Book Shop. The Brick Row Book Shop offers appraisal services of books, manuscripts and archives for numerous purposes: donation to educational institutions, replacement value for insurance coverage, division of property, establishment of a fair market value for sale, etc. There is a link on their site for Appraisals
  • You can try this public site: AbeBooks.com. This Web site is an online marketplace for old books.
  • Or you can show it to a book dealer. Any major yellow pages will list Books, Used & Rare.
  • There are also a couple of good, general sites for analyzing the value of books. Bookride is an amusing site with lots of advice and links. ViaLibri has a search engine for checking about 20,000 book dealers worldwide.

You can find more reference questions and answers at the Information Center Web site.
