1. Reference Forum - Wednesday, July 29, 2-3PM - Creating Online Tutorials
The next Reference Forum will be on Wednesday, July 29, 2-3pm in the IC Classroom, which is located behind the IC Desk in the East Wing of Green Library. (See map, where the IC Classroom is labeled "Instruction Room.")
Falconer Biology Library's summer intern, Kim Stuart, will share her experience with creating online tutorials. Online tutorials using screen capture software such as Captivate and Camtasia allow libraries to meet the instructional needs of users via the Web. Kim will talk about the process of creating a tutorial, from the initial idea through creating an outline, designing the video, and uploading it to the library Web site. You can view tutorial examples at:
https://lib.stanford.edu/falconer-biology-library/interactive-guides-tutorials
If you would like to be on the email distribution list for future Reference Forum announcements, please go to https://mailman.stanford.edu/mailman/listinfo/libref-forum and Subscribe to the list.

2. Special Collections Open House in Second Life, July 31, 9:00-11:00 AM
Have you heard about virtual worlds? Ever wonder how they might be used in the world of archives and special collections?
Come find out at Stanford University's Special Collections and University Archives’ virtual "Open House" in the virtual world Second Life on Friday, July 31st from 9:00 to 11:00a.m. (PST). Drop in anytime during these hours for an overview of our new Virtual Archives, which allows scholars to discover and use our primary resources in a virtual environment.
For the first time, scholars and the casual passersby can walk Stanford's closed stacks and browse some of our manuscript collections—a practice not offered in real life. Stanford's Virtual Archive is a very small but growing subset of our deep storage facility replicated in Second Life. Patrons can open virtual Hollinger boxes and a sampling of scanned documents from the real-life box will appear along with a link to that collection's online finding aid. They can then post their reference questions on the bulletin board, which sends email to our Special Collections staff. Stanford's Virtual Archive provides access to patrons around the world without endangering the collection.
Second Life (SL) is a virtual world where more than 15 million users have created avatars--or online personas--enabling them to explore SL and interact with others from real-time. Reference in SL occurs through in-world text and voice chat as well as our reference bulletin board.
Please join us at our Open House to learn more at the following SLURL address (this is the Second Life location for the Stanford University Special Collections’ Virtual Archive): http://slurl.com/secondlife/Stanford University Libraries/85/224/33. This address launches the Second Life application from your Web browser. For those not already in SL, joining is free at http://secondlife.com/ and we will be happy to help get you acclimated in-world. Look for Sicilia Tiratzo and my colleague in SL, Mollie Mavendorf. We will be on hand to demonstrate the archives site and answer your questions. We look forward to seeing you "in world" on July 31st.

3. Copyright Renewals for Drama Online
The University of Pennsylvania's Catalog of Copyright Entries information page now includes online records of copyright renewals for drama (and works intended for oral delivery) up to 1968, thanks to John Mark Ockerbloom, a University of Pennsylvania digital library architect and planner, Mimi Calter, the Stanford Libraries' special projects librarian and intellectual property manager, and James Jacobs, the Stanford Libraries' government information librarian and a specialist in digital technologies and information access in the digital world.
Penn's Catalog of Copyright Entries information page has included copyright renewals for normal books, and periodicals, but had been missing renewal records for drama. John Mark Ockerbloom could use the scanning services of Penn's Schoenberg Center for Electronic Text and Image (SCETI), but was unable to find copyright renewal records for drama anywhere in the Philadelphia area. He asked Mimi Calter if the Stanford Libraries would loan their complete set. Once the Libraries agreed, James Jacobs managed the logistics of Inter-Library Loan for what are usually non-circulating items.
Although the resulting copyright renewals records for drama are page images only, it's a step towards getting them in searchable form. Ockerbloom has posted similar page images in the past that others have used to make transcriptions and structured data records. Once the records are scanned, the Stanford Libraries can look at creating fielded records, as they have done for the books they have in their Copyright Renewals Database. In addition, because Google is beginning to post original copyright restrictions, it's also possible to correlate renewals with original registrations, and look for interesting statistical phenomena and trends. For more information, see John Mark Ockerbloom's recent blog post: For those wanting more drama in their lives.

5. July Issue of ReMix Now Online
SULAIR's Library Development Office publishes monthly issues
of ReMix: News from the Stanford Libraries.
July's issue has a variety of interesting news items and links, including:
descriptions of the Libraries' role in planning a leadership development
institute for sub-Saharan African libraries and in archiving Web sites and
blogs in Iran, recent publications by Stanford librarians, and how the
Engineering Library is honoring its book fund donors. You'll also find links to
a number of new exhibits and SULAIR/library-related news items, as well as a
link to the Stanford Book Salon's summer reading list.
ReMix is a monthly
newsletter created to inform donors and friends succinctly about distinctive
aspects of SULAIR, including its collections and services, media coverage about
SULAIR, and campus events of possible interest. A third-party service
distributes each issue via email circa mid-month, and a link on ReMix's Web site appears shortly thereafter.
ReMix's Web site
now includes a link to the most recent monthly issue (July), along with links
to all previous issues of ReMix. The
Library Development Office welcomes your suggestions for future ReMix articles.
If you would like to subscribe to future issues of ReMix, please send an email to Sonia Lee

6. Good News for Caltrain and VTA Commuters
According to our friends at Parking & Transportation:
Caltrain announced a 24 percent increase in the price of their 2010 GO Pass as part of their effort to close the budget gap in the next fiscal year. The increase takes effect on Aug. 1. Despite the increase, Stanford has made the decision to purchase 2010 GO Passes for eligible Stanford university employees.
Employees with home addresses in 94304, 94305, 94309, and blank ZIP codes, are not eligible to receive the pass. Eligibility will be based strictly on the ZIP code information in the home address field in StanfordYou. This revised policy applies to both the Caltrain GO Pass and the VTA Eco Pass.

7. Library Development Office Moves to New Web Address
The Library Development Office's updated site has moved to a new Web address and adopted an open-source content management platform, Drupal. It's a work in progress, so please peruse it and send us comments and suggestions. We plan to add more content in the coming months, especially in recognition of donors now that publication of the annual report has been suspended.
Stanford sophomore Michael Rooney contributed the stunning photo of Green Library at night, which illumines our front page; his photo caught our attention and others’ at a spring art and photography show in White Plaza where it was exhibited.
We are also happy to report that in conjunction with the unveiling of our site, the Libraries has been added as a direct-link option for Stanford donors who prefer to give online. The "Make a gift now" link in ReMix will take you directly to a Libraries' donation form on the secure Giving to Stanford site. As always, gifts of all sizes are greatly appreciated.
