1. 2010 Medical Contribution Assistance Program - August 31 Deadline
For 2010, Stanford will continue to provide eligible employees with a subsidy to help pay for family medical coverage. Applications were mailed to the home address July 31. Existing MCAP participants with email addresses on file, plus employees identified as possibly eligible, received an email notification on July 31 via the Stanford Benefits Email News list. Any employee with an annual salary of $80,000 or below should receive an application.
The application deadline is Monday, August 31, 2009. Please note that both the mailing and the deadline are one month earlier than in the past. Applications returned by U.S. Mail must be postmarked by August 31. Applications are also available on the Benefits Web site and the Benefits offices at 320 Panama (Bambi Modular) and SLAC.

2. 2009-10 Parking Permits and Commute Club Memberships
Just a reminder to renew or apply for your 2009-2010 parking permits or Commute Club memberships. Commute Club members receive up to $282 in Clean Air Cash or Carpool Credit in 2009-10. Current parking permits expire on August 31 and there will be no formal grace period. Permit holders need to display their new parking stickers as of September 1. To see 2009-10 permit rates (no rate increase), visit http://transportation.stanford.edu/parking_info/ParkingInformation.shtml#prices.
Select one of the following ways to apply:
1. Online: http://transportation.stanford.edu/orders
2. Fax: 650.724.8676
3. Email (scanned application): transportation@stanford.edu
4. Mail or in person: 340 Bonair Siding (Mail Code 7255) Stanford, CA 94305-7255
The most convenient option is to request your parking permit online by August 21, and request "mail delivery" to avoid a trip to the P&TS office and the long lines associated with the new academic year. If you select "will-call," permits will be available at the P&TS office 5 to 10 days after your application is received. You will be notified when your permit is available for pickup.
Over-the-counter sales are available from 7:30 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. For more information, call 650.723.9362 or send email to transportation@stanford.edu. Application forms are available at:

3. Changes to Printing and Copying Payments
Changes to the Stanford Card Plan (SCP) took place on August 1. If you use your Stanford ID to make photocopies, computer print-outs or large format color copies, you will not be able to add funds on your Stanford ID as payment. You can use existing funds on your Stanford ID until August 31.
Staff/Faculty options for library copying/printing: Purchase and add funds to a Print/Copy card from one of the Cash-to-Card machines located in the Green, Meyer, Engineering, Math, Physics, and Chemistry libraries to make copies, print-outs, and large format color prints for your personal use. Details on adding money to a Print/Copy card are available at How can I get a copy card, and how do I add money to it?
Any funds remaining on your Stanford ID after August 31 will be refunded via check by September 30.
The SULAIR STAFF copy card issued to your department will still be valid for making photocopies.
Student options: From August 1 to August 15, students can add funds to their Stanford ID thru ePay via Axess.
After September 1, a NEW Stanford Card Plan (SCP) will be available to STUDENTS ONLY. Students will need to login to Axess and accept the terms and conditions of the new plan.
For detailed information see: Overview Stanford Card Plan
To summarize:
August 1: Deposits no longer accepted to SCP, plan 55, from Cash-to-Card machines, Cashier's Office, or payroll deduction. Students can use ePay.
August 15: Deposits no longer accepted to SCP from Stanford ePay (student use only).
August 31: Last day to make purchases using SCP, plan 55.
September 1: New SCP available for students, which must be activated by accepting terms and conditions. Staff and faculty must purchase and use Print/Copy cards to pay for printing and copying in most libraries.
Members of SULAIR's Library Services Council (LSC) are coordinating plans for informing and educating our patrons on these changes.

6. *** Reference Question of the Week ***
Question: I need to search a number of old city and municipality policy journals for the early 20th Century. Two examples are: Pacific Municipalities and National Municipal Review. Do I need to look through all the issues or is there an index to such titles?
Answer: There is a very good historical index for such titles, called the Bulletin of the Public Affairs Information Service, which, in its online version, is called the PAIS Archive. This covers both of the titles you mention, from 1915 to 1976. It has many other municipal policy publications as well.
You can find more reference questions and answers at the Information Center Web site.
