1. Banned Books Week - Sept. 26-Oct. 2 - Green Library Display and White Plaza Readings

Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read is observed during the last week of September each year.

This year, beginning September 24, Green Library will highlight the event with a display (across from the Information Desk) of banned books available for checkout and other materials.

The Libraries are also working with the student group, AHA, to publicize the week, including Stanford's first Banned Books Week Read-Out (organized by AHA and other student groups). It will be held on Friday, October 2 from 12noon-1pm in White Plaza. Readers include:

* Rev. Scotty McLennan, Dean for Religious Life, Of Mice and Men
* Professor Shelley Fisher Fishkin, Director of American Studies, Huckleberry Finn
* Rev. Joanne Sanders, Associate Dean for Religious Life, And Tango Makes Three
* Prof. Peter Stone, Political Science, Bertrand Russell on God and Religion
* Jennifer Lynn Wolf, PhD, School of Education, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

For more detailed information about banned and challenged books and Banned Books Week, check out the American Library Association's (ALA) Web site at http://www.ala.org/ala/issuesadvocacy/banned/index.cfm.

2. Never Get Lost in the Green Stacks Again...

Use your mobile device to quickly locate books and other materials in Green Library with our new mobile version of the Green Stacks Locations Guide.

Find the call number area you're looking for (e.g., KK-KZ) and click on the appropriate location (e.g., Bing Wing W2) under "Click for directions".

The mobile version of the Stacks Guide also has a simple map of the library and Green Library hours information.

Check out the guide by pointing your Web-enabled mobile device to:

greenstacks.stanford.edu

Let us know what you think by contacting us at infocenter@stanford.edu. Note that we also have a pocket-sized paper version of the Green Stacks Locations Guide available at the Green Library Information Desk.

3. Readers Sought for 2010 Saroyan Prize

In 2010, SULAIR will once again be awarding the William Saroyan International Prize for Writing. Details on the prize itself, and on past award winners, can be found on the Saroyan Prize Web site:

http://library.stanford.edu/saroyan/

Winners will be selected by a panel of distinguished judges, which is currently being finalized, but we also need a large group of volunteers to do preliminary reading and assessment of the entries. We are working with the Stanford Volunteer Clearinghouse to solicit alumni volunteers, but also want to include staff in this group. Reviewers will receive free copies of the books they agree to review, and will be asked to complete a one-page evaluation form for each. Readers may review as many books as they like, but we would like each reviewer to commit to a minimum of two (2) books. Books will be distributed beginning in February 2010, and all reviews must be completed by April 15, 2010. If you are interested in participating, please contact Sonia Lee at sonialee@stanford.edu.

4. Social Sciences Resource Center Launches New Drupal-based Web Site

The Social Sciences Resource Center (SSRC) has launched its new Drupal-based Web site, produced in partnership with Digital Library Systems and Services. Please visit us at:

http://lib.stanford.edu/ssrc/

As with most new sites, it's a work in progress and we welcome any comments or suggestions. Many thanks to Stu Snydman, Jessie Keck, and Jon Lavigne for their time and support.

5. Library Coffee Kiosk Re-Opening Delayed until January 2010

The coffee kiosk between Green and Meyer Libraries is currently being renovated, and will open for business in January 2010. Both the Libraries and the incoming operator, Coupa Café, had hoped the construction would be completed in time for the start of Fall Quarter. However, the permitting process revealed that certain features of the kiosk, including its plumbing and electrical installations, had become non-compliant with local codes due to code changes that occurred after the original equipping of the structure in 1999. A more extensive renovation plan has now been developed and submitted to the county.

Coupa and the Libraries are working to provide temporary service expedients, such as pushcart coffee service or another service operation in Meyer Library. It is anticipated that a temporary solution will be announced in early October.

Find more details on the Information Center blog.

6. SULAIR News Is Moving to Drupal!

Effective October 1, 2009, SULAIR News will move to SULAIR's drupal site, making it easier to submit articles and to maintain the publication. Instead of submitting articles for a weekly issue, you will be able to submit articles daily. Once you've submitted your article and the SULAIR News editor has reviewed it, it will be published on the new SULAIR News site (usually by the next working day after it has been submitted, at the latest).

We will continue to send out a weekly email announcement each Wednesday. It will include the linked titles of all articles published since the previous Wednesday. You can also set up an RSS Feed for SULAIR News articles, so you can see any new articles as they are published.

The SULAIR News drupal site will include instructions on how to submit an article and how to be notified about new articles. It will also include a Back Issues page that links to previous issues of SULAIR News.

Until October 1, you can continue to submit your articles in the usual way. There will be one more weekly issue on September 30.

7. *** Reference Question of the Week ***

Question: Where can I find the papers of America's founders, the framers of the U.S. Constitution?

Answer: You might want to start with Stanford's U.S. History Collections Page for Colonial/Revolutionary History, specifically the section on founders' documents, which has links to digital papers and locations for print items.

As far as digital collections go, there are two good databases: Thomas (from the Library of Congress) and the Avalon Project from Yale Law School. The Avalon Project's page has a search function. Start by linking to pre-18th century documents, then search for "framers." You will find many relevant documents.

You can find more reference questions and answers at the Information Center Web site.

To contribute to the Reference Question of the Week feature of SULAIR News, submit your question and answer through the SULAIR News online submission form.
